Papsoe (11076), Frederiksberg, Denmark Apr 20, 2005 Updated: Sep 10, 2006(Bottle 50 cl) Incredibly strong, beautiful smell of (milk-)chocolate as soon as this beer is poured. Almost too good to be true, which it also turns out to be as the aroma comes from artificial chocolate aroma. (See back label) What a downer... Also lots of chocolate in the flavour which apart from that is very mild and mellow - the dark malts don’t really shine through. Light body. Very dark with a tint of red. Big light brown head. I certainly don’t approve of artificial flavourings in beer but have to admit, that I quite like this. 170405 omhper (10950), Stockholm, Sweden Jun 22, 2008 Canned (as Hartwall 1836 Classic Chocolate Porter), thanks oh6gdx! Dark brown, rich tan head. Aroma of cocoa powder. Medium dry with clean mouthfeel and light body. Flavour is all cocoa powder with a slight metallic edge and a chocolate sauce finish. A fair attempt, but lack ot talent. oh6gdx (6460), Vaasa, Finland Feb 14, 2005 Updated: Jan 10, 2008Bottled. Black (or very dark) almost opaque with huge brown head. Roasted chocolate in aroma. Mainly chocolate in the taste, with hints of roasted malt. The balance between chocolate and roast is perfect.
Canned in 2008. Same looks, aroma is lots of chocolate, some mild roast. Quite watery mouth these days. I blame the lowering of scores on too much other good beer I have had .) TBone (5172), Pori, Finland Jan 7, 2005 Bottled (BB 08/2005)
I am not sure if this is "a real porter", I presume that this is made with lager yeast. Dark reddish, almost opaque color. Nice creamy brown head, lace. Very strong milk chocolate aroma. Milk chocolate is well present also in flavor. Then turns to normal malty lager giving malty and slightly watery aftertaste. Rating of this is a bit difficult: I like chocolate, but I’m not sure if it is good in beer in large quantities. This is more chocolaty than Camerons Chocolate Ale. bierkoning (5077), La Tropica, Netherlands May 14, 2008 Can, labeled 1836 Classic Chocolate Porter, from TBone. Dark brown color. Strong milk chocolate aroma. Malty flavor with loads of cacao, milk chocolate and raisin. Just a hint of aluminium. Sweetish, very pleasant, almost tasting like chocolate milk. Surprisingly good!
