UPDATED: JUL 20, 2009 Handpulled cask at the Royal Oak Borough before Xmas. Deep amber with a thin off white head. Sickly sweet, malty sugaryness and plenty of alcohol. Where are the hops? This used to be a very well balanced beer for it’s strength a few yearsa ago. Sadly no more.

Cask at the Brick Store in Decatur. Pours a deep amber brown with a very bubbly head that lingered with sizable bubbles for a while. Lacing was minimal. The aroma is very sweet with caramel malts and some dark fruits but there is a lot of vinous characteristics coming out as well - lots of wood and a bit of booze. The taste is heavy of the sugary malts with plenty of dark fruits - plums, figs and raisins. There is a hint of hops in the finish but only in the background. As in the aroma, the wood comes through in the form of some vanilla sweetness and a slightly dry finish. The mouthfeel is, not surprisingly, super smooth with little carbonation. I havent had this in a bottle so I dont have a direct comparison, but I definitely enjoyed this on cask.

My first cask ale -- at Rich Os Publick House. Nice dark amber with a small creamy light tan head. This stuff was very nice with great nutty, vanilla, woody, and caramel notes. The aroma was subtle but the flavor was big. The body was remarkably smooth and exactly what I want in a big beer - silky smooth, rich, thick, and very low carbonation -- enough to give it a nice creamy head though. I hope all cask ales are this deliciously smooth!
