harrisoni (5474), Ashford, Kent, England Feb 7, 2006 Cask gravity at Dover BF 06. Dark reddish brown with beige head. Really quite pleasant if slightly sticky sweet, quite a meaty aroma with lots of orange. Nice dry hop finish and some boiled sweet. Better on the second half pint MesandSim (4623), Highgate, Greater London, England May 11, 2008 A Mes rate: Cask at The Wenlock.
Stunning deep dark amber red colour. No head but who cares? Aroma is an awesome blend of barley, port, spice and sugar. The flavour is even better. Fantastic sweet and sour character. Loads of barley suger offset by an old ale type sourness. Liquorice, spice, just a lick of hops and the characteristic Harveys orange notes. If this was heavily hopped it would be an absolute stunner. Where the hell is the alcohol? The only thing stopping me downing this is the sweetness. Damn this is good beer. Incredible sweet yet sour finish. It’s an absolute joy. Fantastic palate. Not even a hint of carb but it’s sheer velvet. Amazing stuff. I could get extremely drunk on this before I even noticed I was on my way. Love that the abv column on the Wenlock chalkboard says that this is 8.1(ish). Another bloody cracker from Harveys. chriso (4420), London, Greater London, England Dec 24, 2004 Deep ginger colour. Herbal aroma, with spices, dried fruit and hints of bubblegum. Flavour is sweet and herbal with some vinous notes - sherry trifle, maybe even port. Pretty good, but rather sweet, so I wouldn’t want too much. A real warmer, but the alcohol is not excessively intrusive. Cask (handpump), at the Royal Oak, Borough.
maeib (4106), Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England Dec 11, 2004 Cask conditioned - handpump - Royal Oak - Tabard Street, Borough, London. An intensely sweet somewhat sickly alcoholic aroma to this deep brown coloured barley wine. The taste is full bodied and sweet. There are vinuous, madeira like qualities. It is very warming and a sipper rather than a quaffer. Very warming and Christmassy. SilkTork (3950), Rochester, Kent, England Jan 5, 2007 Jan, 2004: The Royal Oak, London A barley wine. Intensely sweet, but with ribbons of bitterness to give some balance and relief. The alcohol is distinctly felt, and along with the sweetness makes this a difficult beer to drink. The flavour range is not expansive, though it is quite pleasant with a suggestion of sherry, tea and oranges. Served in very good condition. Warm malty aroma. [3.2]
Dec, 2004: Royal Oak, London. The London Xmas Crawl. Balsamic vinegar aroma. Oak. Sweet. Gentle sour notes. Good mix. Gentle. Intense fruit. Lemon rind. Vanilla. Brown sugar. Mmmm. [3.7]
