Mes_and_Sim (4176), London, Greater London, England May 11, 2008 A Mes rate: Cask at The Wenlock. Stunning deep dark amber red colour. No head but who cares? Aroma is an awesome blend of barley, port, spice and sugar. The flavour is even better. Fantastic sweet and sour character. Loads of barley suger offset by an old ale type sourness. Liquorice, spice, just a lick of hops and the characteristic Harveys orange notes. If this was heavily hopped it would be an absolute stunner. Where the hell is the alcohol? The only thing stopping me downing this is the sweetness. Damn this is good beer. Incredible sweet yet sour finish. It’s an absolute joy. Fantastic palate. Not even a hint of carb but it’s sheer velvet. Amazing stuff. I could get extremely drunk on this before I even noticed I was on my way. Love that the abv column on the Wenlock chalkboard says that this is 8.1(ish). Another bloody cracker from Harveys.
Ethereal (869), London, Greater London, England Dec 27, 2007 Cask at the Royal Oak with tashi on 13th Dec 2007. Similar to the bottled version - a bit more lively and slightly less strong on the aroma. Still excellent. SilkTork (3860), Rochester, Kent, England Jan 5, 2007 Jan, 2004: The Royal Oak, London A barley wine. Intensely sweet, but with ribbons of bitterness to give some balance and relief. The alcohol is distinctly felt, and along with the sweetness makes this a difficult beer to drink. The flavour range is not expansive, though it is quite pleasant with a suggestion of sherry, tea and oranges. Served in very good condition. Warm malty aroma. [3.2]
Dec, 2004: Royal Oak, London. The London Xmas Crawl. Balsamic vinegar aroma. Oak. Sweet. Gentle sour notes. Good mix. Gentle. Intense fruit. Lemon rind. Vanilla. Brown sugar. Mmmm. [3.7]
Mungo (2474), Southampton, Hampshire, England Jan 3, 2007 Dec 06 Takeaway from Gravity cask @ Middle farm, nr Lewes. Sweet fklavours. Almond past, liquorice, choc, nuts and hints of sherry. This is tasty but too sweet for me. The smattering of dusty hop and tannin in the background doesnt balance. Ok for about 1/4 of a pint - I just drank it over the course of several evenings. Svesse (1621), Hässelby, Sweden Dec 2, 2006 (Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 26 Nov) Dark brown colour with tawny notes. Fruity, sweet, vinous nose with notes of syrup and wood. Slightly closed. Fruity, sweet taste with notes of black-currant, prunes, raisins and caramel. Viscous, syrup-like, body. Sweet, but not overwhelming. Very warming and, actually, surprisingly nice.
