Bottle conditioned - Jubilee Edition.
Note: this is different to the normal Elizabethan.
An exact replica of the ’Coronation Ale’ brewed by Harveys Brewery in 1952 and marketed as Elizabethan Ale. In contrast to its modern counterpart, the original recipe includes flaked barley and black malt. This dark barley wine with its full rich malt character is well hopped with local Fuggle and Golding hops and is brewed in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The 1952 bottling is still drinking well 60 years on and an equal degree of longevity is anticipated with this 2012 bottling.

Dark brown almost black with a beige, lacy, thin, lasting head. Smells of rum and alcohol with spices, deep roast, dark malt, dried dark fruit like cherries and blackcurrant with spices like cinnamon. Full rich oily body. Tastes of full flavoured malt, dark malt with spices that create a rum effect. Cinnamon. I would love to age this for about 10 years if it was bottled conditioned. A great barley wine and distinctly different than the regular Elizabethan Ale.

Bottle shared at GBBF 2016 as ’Harveys Elizabethan Ale’, special 1977 edition. Pours brown with an orange hue, no real head. Bottom of the bottle has a brown crust, but I don’t think this was bottle conditioned. Aroma is sherry and apple. Body is smooth with low carbonation. Taste is sherry, light chocolate, smooth rich fruits. Lovely. (3.8)

clean Amber color with minimal beige head. Aroma is tangy musty dirty with dust and must, tangy fruits and red berries. Taste is also tangy lightly boozy and sweet wth light acidic notes, more notes of tangy fruits, lemon, dust, mould and caramel. Light bodied with minimal carbonation. Overall, meh

Bottle (1977 Jubilee Edition), thanks to Daniel. It pours clear deep brown - black with a tiny beige head. The aroma is rich, oily, sherry, a whole lot of fruit cake, juicy fruit, light spice and boozy Christmas cake. The taste is rich, sweet, juicy, some bitterness, sherry, fruit cake, alcohol warmth, Dandelion & Burdock, plum pie with a fruity finish. Medium + body, hint of carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Rich and flavoursome. Has held up exceptionally well!

Dark fruit in flavour along with raisins and nuts. Soft. 8-3-8-4-16 = 3.9 Rated again April 29, 2016: same score - this time with an even more mellow feel, aroma and flavour.

275ml, May 13 BHJ on the purple crown-top. Malty nose with plums. The beer starts intense malty. Dried fruit (black cherries, plums, blue grapes). The body is quite light and easy to drink, but full and deep intense. Smooth caramel, not too much sweetness, not much bitterness. Easy to drink with a very long aftertaste of roasted caramel and dried fruits. Great!

Bottle at home (from Harveys online) - 23/10/12. 7.5% ABV also has 1952 - 2012 on the badge to commemorate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Pours a clear dark chestnut brown with a thin off white head that soon clears to the edges. Nose comprises treacle toffee, fudge, prunes, dates and burnt sugars. Tastes of dark dried fruits, figs, prunes, toffee, caramelised sugars, treacle and a little alcohol although this is well disguised. Medium bodied with fine carbonation leading to a sweet and fruity finish, An enjoyable barley wine!
