Commercial Description:
Generally available only in pasteurised bottle. Has occasionally appeared in cask. Currently 8.2%, but has been brewed at 8.1% and 8.3%.
Originally brewed to mark the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, this golden barley wine proved so popular that it has been brewed ever since. It is comparable in strength to the beer produced by Tudor brewers during the reign of Elizabeth I. It has won many prizes and, at the International Brewers’ Exhibition 1968, was awarded the Championship Gold Medal. Regular drinkers simply asked for a ‘Lizzie’.

unknown vintage but suspected 5-10 years old, clear dark brown, wispy tan head, rich sweet sherry aroma with ripe fruit include plums, dates and raisons, creamy body with low carbonation becomes too thin, rich dark caramel malt flavor, lots of fruity character, nice sticky sweetness, flavor is a bit of a letdown from the aroma,

Royal Oak, Borough: Smooth, cloudy. Caramel hue. Elements of raisins and cloves in the nose. Sweet finish - served a degree or two too warm!

Strong malty and dried fruit aroma. Dark brown color with minimial head. Strong malty flavors with figs, brown sugar, and roasted malt. Thick and slightly syrupy on the palate. Carbonation is minimial. Sweet finish. Not as hopped as most barleywines. Easy to drink.

Bottled (2002, 8.1%). Clear ruby red colour, small beige head. Aroma is really big time madeira, raisins, plum, alcohol and some dark fruits. Flavour is the same along with wood and vanilla. Leaves a really nice and long aftertaste.

Bottle (Alc. 8.1%) @ Chris_o shindig 2007. Clear medium to dark brown color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly lasting, light brown head. Aroma is sweet port, vintage, alcohol, dark friut. Flavor is moderate sweet with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle, chris_o shindig. Brown, thin tan head. Ruby hints. Strong alcohol, fortified wine notes. Dark fruit. But one-dimensional here. Mouth is sweet, sharp tints. Sweetness lives on throughout. Some sharp over-sweet sour fruit towards the end. Not a huge fan.

A Mes rate: 2002 Bottle at Chris O’s Shindig. Glorious dark amber appearance with a clingy tan head. Sweet alcoholic nose. Similar flavour but with some tasty malt appearing along with some caramel and dark fruits. Not particularly brimming with complexity but tasty all the same.

Muted smells overall, but there’s some toffee and fruits in there. Taste is pure toffee with a dash of coffee and caramel. Doesn’t go down too easily.
