Commercial Description:
Generally available only in pasteurised bottle. Has occasionally appeared in cask. Currently 8.2%, but has been brewed at 8.1% and 8.3%.
Originally brewed to mark the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, this golden barley wine proved so popular that it has been brewed ever since. It is comparable in strength to the beer produced by Tudor brewers during the reign of Elizabeth I. It has won many prizes and, at the International Brewers’ Exhibition 1968, was awarded the Championship Gold Medal. Regular drinkers simply asked for a ‘Lizzie’.

’97 vintage shared by bgburdman. Sweet and absolutely lovely aroma. Hazy mahogany in color with a medium sized head. Thin palate. Light and sweet flavor that I’m sure was much fuller a couple years ago. Glad I got to try this before it went too far downhill.

Bottle #3003 from 1998. From Tops Liquors, Phoenix, Az. 8.1% Aroma of medium dark fruit, backed by malt. Sort of cola colored with a whitish head tht didn’t want to last. Medium mouthfeel. The alcohol is noticable. Light malt, and a not too darkish fruit component, Could be raisinish, but not all that sweet. Very mellow. Aged excellently, especially considering that it’s "dead" for nine years.

(Bottle 50 cl) Beautiful, clear, reddish brown with a dense, retentive, beige head. Vinous, lightly tart malt aroma. Full-bodied with sweetish, dark malts. Some notes of nuts and a somewhat rustic, fusty edge with a vague tartness. The hops are discreet yet still very much present. Charming in a somewhat old fashioned way. 240107

Bottle, Dodgy Deli, Oxford. This is supposed to be filtered/force carbonated, but my bottle really looks like it has yeast sediment. Hazy leather brown with a modest soapy layer of light tan head. Plum, berry, leather aromas. An aged smell, but still bright. Flavor of brown sugar, marmalade. Too sweet really, but it doesn’t linger into the finish so much that it feels dreadfully sticky. Probably past it’s prime, and a bit lacking in hop backbone to stand up to all the sweetness, but I still find this an interesting and engaging sort of beer.

Bottle (from Middle Farm, BB May 07). Sweet malty caramel aromas with a little prune and raisin. Some musty wood in the mouth. Fairly sweet but not to heavy. OK but not really great.

Bottle. Brownish with overpowering sweetness. Very alcoholic and quite pleasant for its style.A decent barley wine to be treated with respect.

Bottle says 1999. Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Tan head migrates and dissipates. Figgy. Slick and sweet yet quad-like. Smooth turns chalky sweet finish. Confused.
