krisbierjaeger (837), dolores, Colorado, USA Nov 18, 2006 what a deal. i paid three bucks for a bottle of the 1998; if you sold little baggies of dirt and dead grasshoppers on the street, you could make better money, and far faster, than this bottle has earned for it’s brewers in 8 years. as chance would have it, i opened a flying dog horn dog barley wine to taste beside this, a strong drink that-- generally speaking-- i kinda like. yet the harveys seems aromatically like perfume on the earlobe of penelope cruz compared to the vulgar feed-bag muddle of the horn dog. splashed into an eager snifter, a brief bikini of bubbles sizzles over the surface of the ’lizzie’ and in a moment leaves you with not enough carbon dioxide to induce even the slightest greenhouse effect over a microchip. what IS rippling over the surface of this amber-glowing heirloom of liquid furniture is an aroma big enough to fill a third nostril: a mixture of port and whiskey, updrafts that are oaky and sweet smelling, but-- at the same time-- are burdened with a two stroke handicap of airplane glue. nearly invisible on the surface, the stealth carbonation miraculously reanimates itself on the tongue and joins with some bready notes of yeast to give the texture some balance. the candy-orange flavor brings christmas to mid-july, and it’s strength of flavor, potency and bitterness combine in an elegant amalgamation of honey toned peach schnapps, figs and grapefruit oils.

A fine old ale / barleywine that has aged with grace. Would have been interesting to see how this brew tasted fresh. This makes for a perfect dessertbeer or just something to sip at late at night. Very nice! JK54B (399), Finland Sep 14, 2008 Nice clear ruby colour. Small beige head. Some hints of madeira, prunes and raisins in the taste. Sweetness. A nice one.
