Cask at The John Harvey Tavern, 12th April 2008. Amber in colour and still with a flowery, grassy hop aroma. Dry and hoppy on the tongue, in the same way as Sussex Best. Nice weight - perfect for sessioning.

Cask at The White Hart, Arundel, West Sussex. Pours a slightly hazy dark gold with an average size lasting fizzy off-white head. Good lacing. Mild aroma of light hops and not much else -- smells nice though. Flavour has a good amount of hops, especially for a U.K. Bitter, backed by malt and a touch of apple/ Average bodied. Quite good, another fave on this trip.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2011 Cask in John Harvey Tavern, Lewes. Pours amber/brown. Touch of the ’Burton snatch’ when held to nose. Caramel dominates the nose with some fruity hop notes. Taste is mildish with malt dominating and caramel with a bit of fruity hop bitterness. Unremarkable standard bitter.

Cask (handpump) as Hadlow Bitter at the John Harvey Tavern, Lewes, during the Harveys brewery tour day, 7 June 2009. Attractive amber colour. A clean, fresh basic bitter. Some light bitterness and a little dry malt. Quite understated all round. Decent but not exciting.

Cask @ Woking Beer Festival 2009. Pours a pale brown colour with a small white head. Good hoppy aroma with a hint of caramel. The taste is sweet with plenty of hops and the caramel still comes through.

Cask @ Lord Nelson, Brighton. Copper colour, off-white head. Lager malts. Flavour is malty, fairly bitter, with some hops.

Handpulled cask at the Garland, Redhill. Amber with a white head. I’ve been drinking this for years as ’Pale’. A graeat session beer, drinking rather like a light mild. Plenty of Harvey’s house characture and not in the least watery. Spiffing stuff on a hot summers evening.

The Garland, Redhill. Amber pint domed with bathfoam. Burton sulphur, peppery hop, touch of apple fruit on snout. Caramel, earthily fruity hop, chalky smoothness. Op-Ale? Drinks like a bottled Belgian ale of modest strength - plenty of mellow English hop character and dusty sherbet fruit from the yeast. Sulphur throughout. Assertively bitter finish lingering with vanilla malty afters. Big flavour at 3.5. Tasty sessions, nothing special.

Cask at the Wenlock Arms as Harveys Hadlow. Deep amber colour with a stable little offwhite head. Caramel and earthy hop aroma. Earthy flavours, some grass and solid bitterness. Lingering aftertaste. Light-bodied. An unpretentious bitter that delivers the goods.

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2011 Cask conditioned - handpump - Lord Nelson, Brighton. An amber coloured beer with white lacing. The aroma is typical Harveys. Peppery hops. Same with the taste. Harveys can do little wrong with their cask beers for me, and even though this is not one of their better beers, it’s still excellent. More alcohol would be a help, but this is deliberately just 3.5%.Score 3.3
