Imperial Extra Double Stout is regarded as one of the Worlds most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout of 9.0% ABV.

This brew will improve and develop complexity up to one year and has an intense flavour which is distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer.

Black beer, odd smell that I cant place. Flavour is basically if you took a rich, malty stout and threw some tangy fruit in there. A bit sour, but nice. Very nice

On cask @ GRAF 2016 a deep brown almost black beer with treacle and coffee aroma flavour is dark chocolate roasted malt coffee liquorice and treacle rich dark with treacle predominant flavour

275ml bottle from Tuckers Maltings. Black colour, beige foam head leaving lacing and aroma of dark fruits, sourish, with liquorice, roast, spice. Taste is roasted malt, nutty, dark fruits & liquorice, leather, tangy with some earthy bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry roast bitter finish. Quite drinkable.

Bottle from my sister. Black pour with a dark brown head that mostly disappears. A fairly fruity and molasses malt aroma, an odd tang or sourness that I guess is supposed to be there, some pomegranate, soy, ash and leather. Mild carbonation and full body, prune, tobacco. Very unique.

Bottle cap is stamped 2013. Pours very dark brown with tan head. Aroma of leather and malt. Taste is the same, of roasted malts. Packed with rich notes of aged barley. Palate is long lasting and dense. Not my favorite of the style, but still a thumbs up.

Dark brown with a small tan head, no lacing. Aroma of soy sauce and chocolate. Taste of dark malts, leather and whiskey
I held up pretty good for a 17yrs old Imp stout

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2016 Feb 2016. I have just uncorked a bottle of 2000 Imperial Extra Double Stout, bottled March 2001, Best before end 2004. No condition. Very black, intense raisiny aroma, similar to an aged sherry. Slight liquorice taste. Dry finish, very warming. Very drinkable even after all these years and probably would have been good for more years yet if I hadnt opened it.

Many thanks to erzengel for sharing! Pours a super dark brown with faint orange highlights and a loose dark tan head. The beer smells of big rich fruit, roast, char. The taste is rich, toasty, dark malts, fruit going into char and dryness on the end. Full bodies and having mild carbonation. A workout for the senses.

Bottle bought at the Royal Oak. Intense plums and malt. Extreme thick and dense. Malt, dried plums. Very dry, hints of typical Stout-sourness. Burned, dry, roast. Not too much bitterness in the end, but a nice malt-bitterness from the roasted malt together with a bit of hops. Long dry malty sticky deep aftertaste on the tongue. Fruit, burned malt, very dense! Fascinating!

(1999 and 2009 bottles in 2015) APPEARANCE- (Both) pitch black. (99) no head, carbonation is about gone. Fairly thick, and a lot of sediment on the side of the glass when I swirl it. (09) light carbonation. NOSE- (99) robust scent lacking any sweetness, with notes balancing between alcohol and vinegar. (09) hardly any scent. FLAVOR- (99) extremely dark/robust flavor that I cant put my finger on. My friend suggested pipe tobacco... maybe. (09) slow to build, especially compared to the 99, but its growing on me. Tiny bit of anise peeks through the complex and robust flavors. NOTES- Perhpas I should have tried it within one year. The complexity of the really old beer intreagues me, but Im probably not going to seek more of newer vintages out soon.
