Imperial Extra Double Stout is regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout of 9.0% ABV.

This brew will improve and develop complexity up to one year and has an intense flavour which is distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer.

Aroma: wine, light oak barrel, light toasted malts, chocolate. Appearance: black, small, creamy head. Taste: light bitter. Palate: very light at first, wine, chocolate, dark fruits, prunes, then toasted malts, bitters coming up and intensifying, light dry finish. Overall: not your usual Imperial Stout, unordinary aroma, palate a bit flat. Bottle from brewery shop, Lewes.

2003 Vintage Corked and released by B. United. Pours a dull burnt umber color with a trace of khaki bubbles quickly fading. Lots of oxidized caramel, sherry, roasted grain, silky body, full rich mouthfeel, layers of fig, date, cocoa, prune, nutty caramel.

Bottle from Tuckers Maltings. Black colour with a deep tan head. Aroma has coffee, chocolate, vanilla and a lasting roastedness. Taste has roasted notes with liquorice. Thick body.

[Bottled, at the Great British Beer Festival, 2015 - Tutored tasting with Roger Protz] - Harvey’s London Imperial Russian Stout, pitch black with a small beige head. Sour yeasty aroma, anilla, strong licorice. Full body, oily. Very sweet licorice start, with a sour yeasty note on the side. Finish is very much licorice, sweet malts, alcohol.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at GBBF in 2011. So, I would assume the vintage on this is around 2011. Pours rich, oily red-black with a dense, creamy beige head. The aroma is crazy, with lots of dark malts, subtle funk, ripe and tangy berries, old leather, earth, soft cocoa. Medium to heavy sweet flavor, a little syrupy, with oily chocolate, more decadent, sugary ripe and lightly tart berries, raspberry, cherry, some musty leather, old bread, hoisin sauce, blackberry preserves. Full bodied, chewy, with light carbonation. Warming, sticky and oily on the finish, with gooey chocolate character, more jammy blackberry, other tart berries, some charred wood, moderate earthy bitterness, brownies. Lingering dark malts and leathery, tangy dark fruits in the aftertaste. An incredible beer. The layers of complexity are impressive. It probably isn’t the most drinkable beer around, but for its dynamic aspects it earns very high marks.

RBAG 2015. Sampeld from an 11.2 fl oz brown bottle. 1999 vintage, I think? Poured out deep brown and headless. Nose has almond, soy sauce, chocolate. Taste of soy, nutty undertones, faded roast. Medium bodied and oily in the mouth. Alcohol wasn’t really present. It was interesting to try, but didn’t really work for me.
