COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

Aroma of caramel and also prunes. There is not head, but very thick. The flavor is full of prunes and alcohol.

9.3 oz bottle from Wilbur’s, vintage 2009. Black with brown head that settles to a thin lace. The aroma is interestingly tart/sour with roasted malts, wood and spices. Pretty full body with a smooth creamy feel. The flavor starts out with roasted malts and chocolate, then light sourness in the middle with a lingering bittersweet finish. Unique and complex.

Bottle 9.30z. [2008] Thx alot L. Pours black with low brown head. Pop-like carbonation at first, dwindeling out. Aroma is of sourness, malt (partly roasted), fruits, cherries, wine. Taste is of sligth sourness, malt (partly roasted), spices, caramel, fruits, cherries, bitterness, very wine reminiscent, sweet, warming alcohol, wood. Palate: Full bodied. Sticky-but-not-too-much texture. Impressive carb for 5 y/o IS. Overall: Incredibly complex. Good carb for style, and not out of place as it fits with the rest. The fruits are astonishing. Makes think of a flander’s red fruits. Massively underrated.

275 ml bottle sampled in 2008. Black body with a really small beige head. Aroma of dark, roasted malt, dry fruit, soy, cellar notes and warming alcohol. Flavor is sweet, dark malt, slightly burnt, balanced bitterness, dry fruit, liquorice, dark chocolate, coffee, slightly acidic berries and warming alcohol. Full body and strong aftertaste. A really complex beer.

Bottle at home. Really rich Madeira cake aroma with caramel figs. A little booze but subdued. Really dark caramel black colour dark tan head. Legs, viscous. Flavour is deep and rich soft caramel, smooth coffee notes, figs and cake. Some alcohol heat, but generally hides it well. This really is very good. Palete is perfectly carbed semi sweet

Pours thick like oil, black with a thin tan head. The nose is heavy anisette, some rosemary, chocolate, light vanilla. The taste is medium sweet and bitter. Great balance. The texture is creamy and smooth, the body is a bit thin but after ten years I would expect so, the finish is long. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Chocolate, molasses, and mild nutmeg aroma. Dark brown with minimal head. Very sweet chocolate malt and moderately bitter herbal hops flavor. Mild ashy finish.

Bottle: 1999 label Pours used-oil black, no head. Aroma is dark, blackberry jam, bubble gum. Taste is sweet-sour...wine like and slightly acidic....blackberry and licorice. More vinegary/bitter as it warms. Interesting...whether it’s the beer itself or the age, I don’t know....fairly complex taste....I like it.

Interesting; can appreciate but not my favorite. Tasting notes are roasty and malty as expected -- with sufficient mouthfeel -- but the sourness is present in at least as abundant quantities. Almost bitter in aftertaste. Quite complex, and different than American imperials to which I'm more accustomed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Roasty chocolate milk with a shot of espresso. Unfortunately a bottle the size of one is kind of pricey.

275 ml bottle - pours deep brown with a steady thin light marroon coloured head. Very subtle yet complex scent with a gentle sour touch - burnt malts - check - but also an earthy funky smell of musk, cask, prunes and blackberries. Medium to big body with incredible explosion of flavour - intensely sweetness, roast and bitterness, beatifully exposing fruity syrup, liquorice, catamel and dark chocolate. Very special, very complex but at the time... a overhelming gentle warmth. Beautiful beer made by brewers that know what balance in beer is about! Big thanks to Dennoman for offering me this one!!!
