Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

Bottle. 2003 vintage. Black with a thin brown head. Aromas of sherry, dark fruit, wood, bitter chocolate and some smoke. Flavour of cough medicine, coffee, heavily roasted malt and awesome beer. This beer is still and lovely.

2003 bottle at home. Totally black, with a line of brown head. Utterly still, this has a true "engine oil" viscous feel. The nose is very complex with dark red wine, port, raisins, soy, strong cheese, old socks, aged wood and even mouldy notes. The alcohol is definitely evident too. Flavour-wise, there’s a lot of similarity, with the vinuous and soft malt flavours coming through a bit more. It’s soft and velvety in the mouth with a good long finish. A good imperial stout. Amusingly, when I first tried this beer (back in the early years of this decade) I found it undrinkable and didn’t even finish the bottles. What a difference a few years developing your palate makes!

Bottle, 2001 vintage. Pours a dark black with nerly no carbonation or head. Lots of roasted coffe and grains in the aroma, along with chocolate, sour vinegar and wine. Flavor is really amazing. Espresso, chocolate, wine, alcohol and a touch of sour funk. Syrupy smooth on the palate. Really great brew.

2003 vintage (Internet ordered). Pours a dark brown/black with a brown head. Smells of sour hops and dare I say almost like wine....Has an unusual taste of sweet dry mellow hops, dark malts that seem to have also mellowed out, molasses and a hint of spice. The mouth feel is syrupy, smooth and complex. Its got this sour/sweet taste that I’ve never experienced quite like this in a beer. It almost taste a little like wine. Overall a very mellow all around brew that obviously has been aged for some time. I’m flored that the average rating is only 3.4, it deserves at least a 4. A very different Imperial Stout that I’m used to, but very awsome indeed.

Dark brown, almost black in color. This is one of pretty interesting beers because it’s roasted sensation is almost not like beer but rather coffee. Taste is complex mixture of black coffee, red wine, bitter dark chocolate, oaks, soy sauce, syrup even burbon. It doesn’t contain any carbonation and the head doesn’t exist. Alcohol is not dominant in taste although it is quite high - 9%. Very unique beer.

bottle, 2003 vintage from beersofeurope.co.uk- wow. pours engine oil, slick syrupy with the slightest hint of a head. chocolate black or read or brown nose is chocolate with hints of an oaked red wine, soy sauce, sea weed, coffee honey and nuts. very complex and reminiscent of the elizabethan ale. oxidisation. tastes chocolate, burnt toast, soy tingling mouthfeel so thick and syrupy, maybe too salty? resiudal chocolate bitterness lingers. great lenth. im utterly impressed what is this doing at an avg 3.4 rating? its at least a 3.9.
