SuperDave70 (1157), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Jun 23, 2008 Bottle, 2001 vintage. Pours a dark black with nerly no carbonation or head. Lots of roasted coffe and grains in the aroma, along with chocolate, sour vinegar and wine. Flavor is really amazing. Espresso, chocolate, wine, alcohol and a touch of sour funk. Syrupy smooth on the palate. Really great brew. MrBeerFanatic (344), jamestown, New York, USA Jun 14, 2008 2003 vintage (Internet ordered). Pours a dark brown/black with a brown head. Smells of sour hops and dare I say almost like wine....Has an unusual taste of sweet dry mellow hops, dark malts that seem to have also mellowed out, molasses and a hint of spice. The mouth feel is syrupy, smooth and complex. Its got this sour/sweet taste that I’ve never experienced quite like this in a beer. It almost taste a little like wine. Overall a very mellow all around brew that obviously has been aged for some time. I’m flored that the average rating is only 3.4, it deserves at least a 4. A very different Imperial Stout that I’m used to, but very awsome indeed. bembelembe (150), Zagreb, Croatia Jun 12, 2008 Dark brown, almost black in color. This is one of pretty interesting beers because it’s roasted sensation is almost not like beer but rather coffee. Taste is complex mixture of black coffee, red wine, bitter dark chocolate, oaks, soy sauce, syrup even burbon. It doesn’t contain any carbonation and the head doesn’t exist. Alcohol is not dominant in taste although it is quite high - 9%. Very unique beer. LooseCannon (914), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Jun 5, 2008 11.2oz bottle, 2003 vintage. Pours pitch black in color with not head at all. Aroma of red wine, prunes and sweet. Taste of red wine, prunes, roasted coffee and dark chocolate with bitter finish. chimplechamp (463), Oslo, Norway Jun 3, 2008 bottle, 2003 vintage from beersofeurope.co.uk- wow. pours engine oil, slick syrupy with the slightest hint of a head. chocolate black or read or brown nose is chocolate with hints of an oaked red wine, soy sauce, sea weed, coffee honey and nuts. very complex and reminiscent of the elizabethan ale. oxidisation. tastes chocolate, burnt toast, soy tingling mouthfeel so thick and syrupy, maybe too salty? resiudal chocolate bitterness lingers. great lenth. im utterly impressed what is this doing at an avg 3.4 rating? its at least a 3.9. santos999 (318), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 2, 2008 2003. Rich, deep black body with no head at all. The aroma is incredibly alcoholic, backed by dark fruit, molasses, soy sauce, vinegar, chocolate and espresso notes. Brutally strong taste! Very malty and focused on the dark side of things - soy sauce, roasted malts, brown sugar, espresso, port, oak, bourbon, chocolate cake, fudge, and so much more. The lack of carbonation doesn’t bother me in this brew. The flavors are so strong and intense that you have to sip it. This is really a fantastic imperial stout, and I hope to brew something along this line real soon. The black, thick, syrupy sweetness of Le Coq is really unmatched. In a world that’s so crowded with stouts, this one stands out in the crowd. kempicus (350), Wellington, New Zealand May 30, 2008 Tried thanks to Greig! Pours a dead flat deep black. Vinous and tobacco on the nose with whisky overtone. Slightly thin body with flavours dominated by a whisky note like it’s aged in whisky barrels also leather and marmite with dark fruits and peppery heat. yespr (11613), Copenhagen O, Denmark May 29, 2008 33 cL bottle, 2003, Harveys Imperial Extra Double Stout. Pours pitch black with a little bubbly dark brown head fully disappearing in an instant. Aroma is overripe fruit towards wineous notes. Solid malt note too. Flavour is quite intense fruity at first before a solid tar and soy sauce flavour hits the tongue. Hardroasted and with a gradual increasing fruity note towards the finish. Solid bitterness and acidic touch into the finish with a dense fruit note and even more tar.
