Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

2003. Rich, deep black body with no head at all. The aroma is incredibly alcoholic, backed by dark fruit, molasses, soy sauce, vinegar, chocolate and espresso notes. Brutally strong taste! Very malty and focused on the dark side of things - soy sauce, roasted malts, brown sugar, espresso, port, oak, bourbon, chocolate cake, fudge, and so much more. The lack of carbonation doesn’t bother me in this brew. The flavors are so strong and intense that you have to sip it. This is really a fantastic imperial stout, and I hope to brew something along this line real soon. The black, thick, syrupy sweetness of Le Coq is really unmatched. In a world that’s so crowded with stouts, this one stands out in the crowd.

Tried thanks to Greig! Pours a dead flat deep black. Vinous and tobacco on the nose with whisky overtone. Slightly thin body with flavours dominated by a whisky note like it’s aged in whisky barrels also leather and marmite with dark fruits and peppery heat.

33 cL bottle, 2003, Harveys Imperial Extra Double Stout. Pours pitch black with a little bubbly dark brown head fully disappearing in an instant. Aroma is overripe fruit towards wineous notes. Solid malt note too. Flavour is quite intense fruity at first before a solid tar and soy sauce flavour hits the tongue. Hardroasted and with a gradual increasing fruity note towards the finish. Solid bitterness and acidic touch into the finish with a dense fruit note and even more tar.

Bottle.Black with a wine like aroma. First impression was of port crossed with stout. No carbonation and no head. Pleasant, different but only an occasional drink.

Poured from an 11.2oz corked bottle (2003 vintage) and served in a snifter. This stout poured a solid jet black with almost no head. The aroma of the beer was made up of fermented fruit, plums, high quality cherries, molasses, and sugary licorice. The flavor was dominated by heavy black strap molasses. Most of the sweet fruitiness displayed in the aroma was unable to creep through the heavy malt. One-sided and a bit dull. The mouthfeel was full-bodied and heavy in the belly, but at the same time, it felt a bit thin (maybe due to age). Not all that tasty, but it was substantial...this would definately qualify as a meal in a glass. 11.2oz was a bit much to drink in one sitting.

2003 bottle, smells like a flemish sour, tastes like funk.. i dont see whats cool about there, its oily its uncarbonated... it has a funky end taste tastes like sour then mild amounts of roast, this is bad... and going down the drain.. unless you like Port.. which case, drink up.

A typical extreme IS, much like WWS, with port-like qualities. Pours a wickedly thick, oily, and viscous. Firm and caramel colored head. Definite notes of oaks (namely a sweet smoke, but subtle). I felt a little rushed, drinking this with friends, but this was a finishing blow to a hefty night of drinking as is. Oddly tart for an IS, but it was still pleasant and sippable. (Bottle Pour 4/29/2008) 2003 Vintage Le Coq. Bottle
