Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

Bottle shared by footbalm. I am really surprised that this beer is so often bad. I mean, for what might be a good beer, why does it so often turn to crap? I cannot understand this, but before opening Eric warned that it was often quite off, and it was. The cork had no pop at all. A black body with no head. The aroma is sour soy sauce. The flavor has suggestions of the good beer that this could be; some brown sugar, coffee and malts. But, there is that sour and soy sauce flavor. I wish that I could try this beer without the infection.

1999 Vintage: I have poured this into a tulip. It is possibly the blackest beer I have ever seen. Totally still. The nose is of dark, roasted malt, and dark fruits. The taste is of chocolate, then a vinous quality, and then smooth, roasted malt. There is a bitter coffee flavor at the finish. This has aged well. The mouthfeel is quite light for such a big beer. The lack of carbonation is not an issue. As for drinkability, I am compulsively sipping this beer to death. I have never had any other vintage of this. The beer’s unique, I’ll have to hand it that. Tastes like three parts port wine, one part soy sauce. Not very enjoyable.

Bottle. Pours black with absolutely no head. Initial tastes are sweetness accompanied by a tangy sourness. Dark malt flavors as well as chocolate, coffee, and even some saltiness. Very interesting brew.

Pours black. Spicy nose. Tastes of alcohol and chocolate, with a little sweet raisin floating around. 2000 vintage bottle that I enjoyed but gladly shared.

Vintage 2003. Pours a thick black. Aroma of licorice, mixed with dark malts. The taste a roller coaster ride of sorts, as the complexity of it has almost too many characteristics. Strong in licorice and molasses, but lacks in the department of roasted or chocolate malts. A bit salty. A bit sweet. A bit sour. A bit odd.

Ohh man. Absolutely terrible. I had to find out if mine was shot since imadeadguy rated his. And it was. Poured thick black with a tiny brown head. Aroma of soy sauce. Taste was all soy and alcohol.

2000 vintage. Pours like 10,000 mile motor oil with no head what so ever. Aroma of soy sauce. Tastes like soy sauce and not much else. Wasn’t feelin’ this one at all. No thanks!
