Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

Vintage 2000. Pours a viscous motor oil black with only a minimal dusting of carbonation. Nose is like christmas pudding: dark currants and raisins soaked in brandy butter. Mouthfeel is strangely silky yet somehow light, with strong roasted malt character developing in molasses sweetness towards medicinal alcohol and surprising English hop character considering its age. A unique and occasionally enjoyable stout.

Bottle, 2003. Very dark brown with a slight tan head. Thick sweet heavy aroma of sugar, plums, dates and raisins. Sourness in the taste is followed by sweet chocolate and cocoa, ash, alcohol, liquorice and espresso. Then a sharp bite of bitterness, despite which the overall impression is oily and smooth. A wonderful beer. But not too often.

Vintage 1999 11.2 oz Bottle - Pours a black oil with no head (don’t know if this intentionally non-carbonated?). It smells like a lambic and a stout mixed. It tastes much the same - like chocolate and little bit like cherries. This is alright, but it needs carbonation and then I’d probably love it.

Black black color with a thick heavy head. Strong malty/licorice aroma. Flavor is big with tons of lightly sweet malts, noticeable alcohol presence, some chocolate, and berry, smoked and thick as a beer can be. Good, but not great.

[Bottle] Pours black with a dark tan head. Aroma is raisin, alcohol, liquorice and some roasted malt. Taste is a lot of raisin, with alcohol present on the tongue, and quite a bit of roasted malt in the finish (more than what was present in the aroma). Medium-thick mouthfeel. An enjoyable impy.

2003 bottle from Utobeer. Jet black with a tight, long-lasting tan head. Aroma of charred malt, licorice, prunes and soy sauce. Big, chunky mouth feel, with flavours of roasted malt, dark chocolate and cinnamon, with a warming alcohol/ bitter & savoury finish. Complex and excellent.

2003 Vintage. 11.2 oz. bottle. Pours an opaque black with absolutely no head. This stout appears to be still. Strong aroma of cognac, raisins, and bitter chocolate. The flavor is dominated by strong soy sauce which overwhelms the other flavors which inlcude tobacco, alcohol, and bitter chocolate. Lots of alcohol and soy sauce at the finish. This one is definitely a slow sipper.
