Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

Bottle - 2001 vintage Pours like motor oil. I was blown away by the aroma. Mainly because it was a total shock. There was noting that I expected from an imperial stout and everything I would expect from a glass of wine. Taste was a mix of an imperial, barley wine, and a sour. I am not a sour fan but this one worked much better for me. The bottle was shared, and I think that I am going to need to try again. I would also like a fresh bottle to see what happened in the 8+ years.

Bottle - 2001 vintage - Oh my dear God, did this come out of nowhere. Pours dark black with no head at all. Smells of...holy crap...red wine, and really sour. It doesn’t smell like any IS I’ve ever had. There’s a bit of vanilla in there too, but the red wine just blew me away. Taste is that luscious red wine with sweet caramel/toffee underneath, along with some dark roasted malt. It’s sweet and syrupy, and I’m going find this stuff to stock my cellar with--the older the better, apparently.

11.2 oz bottle ’99 Vintage-Pours black with a small tan head that dissipates rather quickly into a ring. Aroma of stout(roasted malt and slight coffee) and Barley Wine(sweetness and caramel). Taste is some sourness along with sweetness. Wonder when I tried this if it was past its prime. Would of liked to have tried in its prime.

This bottle has been waiting for me for six years (since 2003). Black, No head. Aroma: Roasted malt, dried fruit. Strong flavor of port, licorice, dried fruit. Strong, bitter/sour finish. This has got to be the strongest Stout I have yet to drink.

2001 bottle shared by Jerc and Mabel. Appearance: Glass of used motor oil, slick black with zero head. Aroma: Thick and spicy aroma, bitter malt and somewhat milky. Flavour: Toast, malt, burnt Christmas pudding, alcohol, deep black fruits and thick as hell.

2003 vintage. Pours black with a few tan bubbles. Aroma is the most vinous of any RIS I’ve come across. It smells like a sours with a bit of roasted barley at the end. Flavor is sweet, acidic, and sour. Roasted barley and coffee notes come through and linger a very long time. A bit drying on the tongue. Mouthfeel is slick and slightly oily. This is a very odd imperial stout but good nonetheless.

Cask@GBBF 2009, vintage 2009? 2008 says Camra website. Opaque black color, small beige head. Oxidazed licorice and caramel aroma, lots of molasses. Full-bodied. Lots of licorice, molasses, dark malts and raisins. Very sticky. Alcohol and molasses in the aftertaste.

[2293-20090626] 11.2floz bottle. Heavy sweet plum roast malt aroma also features currants. Brown black body with a quick foamy tan head. More roasted sweet fruit flavour has heavy currant influences. Full body is flat. "Like a glass of motor oil" but otherwise not bad.
