Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

2000 bottle. Pours a pitch oily black with no head. Aroma of bitter dark chocolate, burnt malt and black licorice. Taste of bitter chocolate, malt and old black licorice. Hints of oxidation in this one. Past its prime ?

Black with no head. Aroma is complex with notes of liquerice, burnt malt, overripe fruits, alcohol and wood. Flavor is rather vinious with strong alcohol note along with liquerice, wood and burned malt. Finishes dry and bitter.

(bottle) Inky pour with a dark tan head the dissolved to a fine ring around the glass. Aroma contains sweet graham cracker, some dry cocoa, and vinous smells too. Taste is quite sweet and vinous, with a little chocolate, light soy sauce, and subtle roasted malt. Pretty thick mouthfeel with a bittersweet/roast finish. Not too bad and quite unique.

2003. Poured black as oil with zero head. Aroma was present but not strong. Slightly sweet, cherry, molasses, and coffee notes in the aroma. Flavor was that of chocolate, toffee, coffee, and the 9% alcholol was present in the flavor at the end. Smooth and zero carbonation. Thinner than I would have thought in the mouth.

2003 bottle. Pours a deep thick black color with zero head. Has a powerful wine/soy sauce aroma which carries over to a roasted soy sauce wine flavor. A little off putting at first, but a few sips in its not so bad.

2003 vintage, Flores, Leicester. Glugging pitch pour with a subsiding tan head. Intense, distinctly briny aroma with ozone and Bovril. Flavour punches with charred-to-a-cinder malt bitterness, salt, leather, yeast extract, rauchbier waxiness, bitter chocolate, SMOKE, and heady xmas pudding fruit. Smoky tobacco afters. Milkily thick and still. Uncompromising, intense, salty imperial stout/porter with genuine Baltic character. As you’d expect.

Vintage 2001Pours an oily DEEP brown with no head, no matter how hard I tried! Nose is complex and unique, with spice, molasses, fruity like berrry influence also present. Favor is like a zinfindel, with some bitterness, chocolate and smoke. The finish is very wine-like, with a bitter and boozy influence. An interesting brew, but I won’t buy again.
