extremeicon (108), Wichita, Kansas, USA Aug 25, 2007 Pours black with an infinitesimal brown head. Aroma of fruit and coffee. Flavor shows a bit more alcohol than I prefer but the accompanying sweetish fruity coffee flavor is pleasant. Not so much syrupy as oily on the palate. Slightly bitter aftertaste. oh6gdx (8802), Vasa, Finland Aug 22, 2007 Bottled. Dark brown colour with small brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, sweet sugary notes, raisins and some fruity hops. Flavour is acidic and sour coffee along with some roasted malts and caramel. Not too exciting, but still a pleasant impy stout. gunsho (134), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Aug 21, 2007 this beer is strange. mine was a 2001 and i think it may have sat too long. the beer poured a slick, black oil with no head. alas, the few bubbles that materialized were of the darkest, deepest brown i’ve seen in many imperial stouts. the nose is exceptional, with a fruity pomengrnate, sugary liquorice aroma, quite unexpected for the style. the flavor plays nicely on the palate. it starts with a wild smoky, roast feeling but finishes sour, seems strange, but it works. it isnt my favorite, but definately worth the experience. Doppelganger (1353), Dry County, Arkansas, USA Aug 19, 2007 Bottle, Chris o shindig. Black, just a tan bubble or two. Yeasty, oily, sour aroma, a bit of chocolate down there somewhere. Tart flavor, mouth-coating marmite. Thick viscous palate. Very full flavored and unique. Apart from that, it hurts my stomach and is just a little too much muchness. cbeers21 (563), Miami, Florida, USA Aug 14, 2007 Bottle. Pours bubbly oily black with thin head. Interesting hoppy spice flavors....almost like salty mustard? Deep roasted coffee flavors seep in towards the back, and leaving a drying bitter quality in the mouth. Decent mouthfeel. I cant remember ever having to use a corkscrew for a beer.....overall this beer isn’t up my alley and I won’t try again, that said, I am glad I tried it. M0RHI (1067), Luxembourg, Luxembourg Aug 10, 2007 Bottle, chris o shindig. Thick treacley black. Nose is sweet and meaty, bovril. Liquorice and meaty sweetness in the mouth. Malty, rough, sweet palate. Very good, but a bit too rich - couldn’t manage a whole one! Wanted to take a spoon to it! Glouglouburp (2782), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 8, 2007 Black body with almost no head. Aroma of wine and molasses. Absolutely dead body with flavours of liquefied cacao, molasses, raisins and a few drops of vinegar. Sticky vinous mouthfeel. I’ve had good bottles of that in the past but never took notes. Now when I pull the a bottle, pen and paper that’s what I got. The corking without a cap might be the problem. English breweries do not exactly have a long history of corking beers. Anyway when it’s good it’s good and when it’s bad it’s bad (was the case here). Give it a try if you like to live dangerously but I for one am giving up on them. My idea of a good time is drinking Russian Imperial Stouts not playing Russian Roulette. redlight (1445), Winter Park, Florida, USA Aug 7, 2007 vintage 2000. Hints of soy sauce on the nose, sweet chocolate, roasty. Pours very dark brown/black, the center appears black with dark brown edges, no head, no apparent carbonation. Wow, extremely roasty, black coffee, a little soy sauce like flavors but overpowering, baker’s chocolate in the aftertaste.
