Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

Bottle, chris_o shindig. Thick treacley black. Nose is sweet and meaty, bovril. Liquorice and meaty sweetness in the mouth. Malty, rough, sweet palate. Very good, but a bit too rich - couldn’t manage a whole one! Wanted to take a spoon to it!

Black body with almost no head. Aroma of wine and molasses. Absolutely dead body with flavours of liquefied cacao, molasses, raisins and a few drops of vinegar. Sticky vinous mouthfeel. I’ve had good bottles of that in the past but never took notes. Now when I pull the a bottle, pen and paper that’s what I got. The corking without a cap might be the problem. English breweries do not exactly have a long history of corking beers. Anyway when it’s good it’s good and when it’s bad it’s bad (was the case here). Give it a try if you like to live dangerously but I for one am giving up on them. My idea of a good time is drinking Russian Imperial Stouts not playing Russian Roulette.

vintage 2000. Hints of soy sauce on the nose, sweet chocolate, roasty. Pours very dark brown/black, the center appears black with dark brown edges, no head, no apparent carbonation. Wow, extremely roasty, black coffee, a little soy sauce like flavors but overpowering, baker’s chocolate in the aftertaste.

Bottle. 2003 vintage. Purchased @ Holiday Wine Cellar for $5.99 several months ago. What an interesting beer this is. Pours like motor oil. Thick and viscous with a nice tan head. Smells like a sour belgian ale. Flavor is strong on the dark roasted malts with some sourness in the finish. The flavor is kind of salty, almost tastes like soy sauce. Alcohol is not well hidden. Very different beer, bordering on weird, but screw it, I like it.

Enjoyed at the Brewhouse in Norwalk. Poured an oily black hue with out a head. It looked really thin but it wasn’t. Aroma was rich with malt notes, coffee, cocoa, alcohol. There was a slight hop presence to it. Flavor was a little more hoppy then i expected, but otherwise the flavor matched the aroma. It seemed to be higher alcohol then 9%. Not my fav imperial stout but still decent.

99 vintage. This is my second time around with this one after my first bottle was not a positive one. Pitch black pour. No head with a flat pour. Brandy/Port? on the nose with the slightest taste of fuggles. Taste is roasted oak. Great finish. Starting to understand this beer a little more. Would like to taste a fresh vintage to see exactly where this beer went. Super interesting beer. Worth two tries.

I don’t know...maybe I just don’t "get" this one. Wonderful nose, full of figs, spices, and roasts, a bit of mahogany actually. Pours like motor oil, but absolutely no head. Tastes like it might have aged TOO much, very woody, a bit acidic. I set it to the side and went after an Old Rasputin.
