Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

Bottle vintage 2001 - as a bonus in trade with willblake! - Thanks Jon - Pours black and oily thick with a big mocha head that fades pretty quickly back to a ring but laces some from there. Aromas of soy sauce, coffee, and bakers chocolate. Flavor is lots of dark fruits, prune, black currant, some coffee, dark bakers chocolate. Full bodied oily palate and a thick mouthfeel. Alcohol is completely covered.. This was a pretty tasty impy and I wonder how some of these ratings are so low...

Vintage 2000

11.2 oz. bottle is stopped with the driest cork I have yet encountered, and there was no saving it. Pours still and headless, jet black revealing a thin corona of bistre when held to the brightest light. Huge affront of soy in the aroma with prune, black coffee and bourbon. Despite some silkiness on the tongue, the mouthfeel is far too dense... almost chokingly so. Flavor finds bitter chocolate (very bitter) with Port, molasses, dirt and ash. Seeps down the throat slower than NyQuil, with a feeling that it wants to crawl back out. Not what I expected. Not at all.

11.2 oz. corked bottle, marked "2000." Inky black with a tinge of red around the edges, and no hint of a head, but twith a few tiny bubble coming to the surface around the edges. Charcoal, licorice, prunes, raisins, and alcohol on the nose. Somewhat oily, sticky mouthfeel. Burnt sugar bitterness overpowers the other flavors. I just did not enjoy htis. Obviously, there are others out there who do, based upon the ratings that I’ve seen. I don’t think it’s bad, and there is some complexity lurking in there, but it just seems overbalanced toward the dark roasted malt and burned flavor side of the equation to me. I’ll also admit to not being a big fan of still beers.

2001 Bottle. Very Dark, very flat, no head. Red wine aroma. Spit out my first sip because the wine/vinegar experience surprised me. Grows on you a little, but not much. If you are wanting a beer/wine experience then maybe this is for you. But this is definitely not what you think of when you think of a stout. Some have likened this as a "merlot that has gone bad",... then they rate it high. I guess I’m not so sophisticated. I hated this.

2001 Bottle. Pours close to black with almost no head at all. The aroma is kind of vineous with some fruitiness - cherry and grape. Medium body with absolutely no carbonation. Taste starts with moe of a red wine taste and feel than beer. However there is a sticky malt thickness as well that is somewhat cloying. The finish seems to have a tannin bitterness along with some dark malt. It is a mix of cloying a bitter. Different, but not my thing.

2001 bottle. I was surprised to find this beer corked. Even more surprised to find out that it creates not "pop" when opened. The cork smelled like a wine and the por was flat with not head and a smell of a port wine. First thoughts were "oh man this one is funked". But guess what it became a very nice dessert beer/night cap. Deep black with no head. Very good flavor that made my mouth water everytime I took a sip. Good paltae made me want more. Impressive what 5 years could do to a 9% beer. I think this beer may have about another 2-4 years on it to reach it’s peak. I feel lucky to have found it. Cheers!

2000 Bottle. Aroma is deep and heavy with sour wine edge. Carbonation level is near flat despite the pressurized botle warning - only an occasional tiny bubble dares to emerge when swirled. Midnight black with a tendency to cling to the side of the glass like motor oil and a few bits of cork. Flavor has a slightly bitter, roasty, astringent edge. Clings to the incide of the moth much like it clings to the inside of the glass. I would be curious to try a fresher bottle as I doubt this beer has improving with age. I won’t be finishing this rather pricey bottle.

(Bottle 2001, B.B.E 2006). No pressure in bottle. Pitch black colored, no head. Aroma is vinous with port wine and sweet caramel, sourness also with some cork and alcohol. May not have aged very well...Near full bodied. Flavor is even stronger with sour wine and alcohol, some roastiness and smoke also there. Aftertaste has red wine and some sour alcohol and licorice. Oily palate, very thick bodied indeed.
