Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

Incredibly vinous and rich nose. Pours as dark as night. It shows no liveliness like that of any lighthearted beer, more it seethes broodingly in the glass with all the foreboding of a deep molasses swamp at midnight. On sampling it takes a while for the tastebuds to accustom themselves to the incredibly rich and deep flavour, but when they do notes of syrup of figs, christmas mince, month old raisins in sherry, and other spicy, sweet, vegetative characters. Nice.

As soon as this 2001 bottle is uncorked the room is filled with a heavenly aroma. The beer pours with a delightful glug glug sound. The glass fills with a black beer with brown/red/cherry bubbles around the edges. The aroma is as complex as it is extremely powerful and potent. Most prevalent scent is of port and cask wood but has a rich and wide range of spices and fruit. Taste is a bit acetic and sour that fades into a fruity but bitter scotchy aftertaste. Smells better than it tastes or maybe this bottle has been sitting out in the heat a little too long. Nothing I would expect an imperial stout to taste like.

2001 bottle at christian firtal Odense: . Black with a reddish hew. No head at all. Vinous and roasty malty aroma. Some liquorice & smoke. Filling & creamy texture. warmth from alcohol. Very sour, almost like a Beer rouge. Finish is long and again vinous and has slight bitterness. Never tasted an imperial stout this vinous - different.

(2001 11.2 oz. bottle from Belfast Co-op) Pours very dark brown, almost opaque with a small brown head that recedes to a film. Aroma of prunes, chocolate, raisins and red wine. No real lacing but leaves thin syrupy film along sides of glass. Mouthfeel smooth, full, a little syrupy. Flavor is port-like with dark semi-bitter chocolate and prune juice also in the mix. Very mild alcohol burn. Mild bitter chocolate aftertaste. Pretty good but something about the flavor wasn’t really working for me (too sour? not roasty?).

2001 bottle. Pitch dark brew, almost no carbonation, formed a tiny rim around my glass. As for the aroma, I simply coud not believe what I was smelling: soy sauce, iode, burnt coffee, wood... I suspect if I had tried this at a blind tasting I would have been skeptical this was actually a beer, (the nose reminds me more of a scotch with the salty notes and wood). Once again the flavor is surprising, very salty, quite sour and an intense coffee bitterness develops to unprecedented intensity in terms of strenght and lenght. Body is oily and watery. Very unusual, certainly not the most representative of the style, yet I recommend a try.

2001 vintage -- Pure black body with a dark tan head, nice and thick during the pour, just the way I like it. A bit of oxidation is noticed in the aroma, musky, roasted malts, some salty overtones, very nice. Heavy sourdough-bread accents in the taste, though when it warms up complexities show up. Almost a lambic like sourness that’s just beyond the reach of the tastebuds. Roasted malts, peaty, salty soy accents, oaking has definatly affected this one. Sweet, syrup like ending. Overall, a very unusual Imperial Stout... enjoyable, but not something that everyone who likes this style will enjoy.

2001 Bottle on 07/09/2006. Dark mohogany color. Aroma of soy sauce, wood, and some sweet molassas. Slightly sour flavor, lots of wood notes, some more soy and molassas.
