Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

(2001 vintage at Delirium Cafe, Gothenburg) Pure black colour with a thin yellowish head. Woody, earthy, cellary, corky, yeasty slight vinous nose. Woody in flavour too, with an acidity that just won´t go away. Vinous, a little sugary, and roasted, with some notes of soy, liquorice and tar. Great bitterness. Small hints of red berries in finish. Long aftertaste. Medium to full bodied. Has a warming alcohol feeling.

Bottled, 2001 Vintage. Sampled at Delirium Café, Göteborg. Black as coal. Vineous aroma with notes of tar and soy/balm vinegar. Mouthfeel is big, flavour has notes of tar, salt, dried fruits/plum and is vineous. Looong finish.

I was not ready for this one. It is so thick and so dense and it overwhelms you!! You literally have to sip a teaspoon of this at a time to appreciate it. The thickest densest stout in terms of taste I have ever had.

Opaque black to dark brown in color with a thin yet lingering light brown head. Aroma of smoked cherries. Complex roasted malt, smoke, chocolate, and wine-like flavors. No alcohol in the taste, but its warmth is evident after the swallow. An excellent example of the style, but the import pricetag on a 11.2 ounce bottle is more than a litle high at $5.49.

Poured from the bottle, very black, a think consistency (a bit like milk), no head at all. Aroma was quite vinegary, but sweet (like flowers). The flavour was a little vinegary again, a bit like a fortified wine. Very hard to compare against anything I have drunk before, a real experience!

Pours like used motor oil with almost no head. The aroma is much like Worcestershire sauce. It has a nice, thick mouthfeel and leaves a sticky coating. The flavor is bittersweet chocolate with soy and some floral notes. A good Russian Imperial, but certainly not accessible to those who don’t like this kind of thing.

2001 bottle: Pours a motor oil body. Not extremely thick but regardless it’s motor oil. Aroma is chocolate and alcohol. Flavor is the same, and it’s drowned in the alcohol, in effect killing it.

Bottle. Pours very oily thick with little head. The alcohol is noticable in the bittersweet soy sauce aroma. There is a detectable winey flavor after the initial robust wall of bittersweetness. Incredible thickness.
