Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

Vintage 2001. - Black in colour, with no head. Overwelming nose with notes of treacle, tobacco and raisins. The taste is dominated by roasty flavours, and by the thickness of this stuff,- it really fills out your mouth. Ive never tasted anything like it, this really is unique!

My 2000 bottle must have become flat. In the picture for this selection, I see a head on the glass of black stuff. Anyway, I need to re-rate a good bottle in the future. Straightforward molasses and coffee flavors. Very thick and promising, wish it was carbonated at least a little.

2001 Bottle. Black pour, no head at all, looked like one of my attempts at the style in homebrewing. Syrupy looking. Some roasted notes and strong molasses notes in aroma. Thick mouthfeel. Roasted flavours dominate the taste, which were nice, but as it warms becomes almost wine like and strong. This was ok, but pretty simple.

(Bottle 27,5 cl) Pitch black, completely opaque, tar-like appearance. Absolutely no head. Extremely thick and - again - tar-like. No carbonation whatsoever. Fatty, earthy aromas, some cork also. Dry with a bitter finish. Actually not overly complex, but completely extreme in body. A very difficult beer to finish. 250605

Bouteille Charlie’s Liquor, Janvier 2005.

Vintage 2001. Vinous, raisiny, grape-like aroma. Quite vinous and smells wine-like. Hints of molasses are also present. Opaque dark brown with a quickly dissipating tannish head into flatness. Wow, this is really thick. Start is extremely chewy with some chocolate roasts to start. Some oxidation in the middle finishing acetic figs and molasses are also in the end. Alcohol is noticeable. Quite warming. Not your every day imperial stout, but unique in its own way. I’d like to try a 2003 bottle...

2000: Pour is black with no head...I mean no head...smell is portlike with alcohol...so far, I would not guess this is an impy stoud...how’d they get that head in the picture...oaky in the nose too...five years and the alcohol is overwhelming at only 9%...dark fruits and a hint of coffee...interesting mouthfeel, but this is really not very good....

Version 2000. Robe noire très opaque avec une trainée brune visqueuse sur le verre. Aucune mousse. Bois, alcool, réglisse, café, chocolat amer, houblon. L’alcool est peut-être un peu trop présente pour 9%, mais c’est bien bon!
