Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

Bottle: (2001) Opaque, blacker than black, light brown head, frothy, fairly decent lacing.   Sour aroma, woody, slightly vinous on the nose.   Similar on the tongue.   Addition of burnt malts, figs, soy, and light alcohol.   Great body, but with a fairly mediocre mouthfeel.   Emergence of apple skin a the finish.   Aroma gets much more hotter as it warms.   Not what I was expecting, no coffee or chocolate notes.   Otherwise, a fairly big/bold Impy Stout!

Aroma is fruity, notes of soy, malty, coffee. Dark black, dark brown, small head. Oily texture, velvety feeling. First a very fruity impression, then malty and sweet. Spicy with a soy note. In the end a quite noticeable alcohol note with a burnt chocolate and coffee flavor. A quite winey note, astringent finish. A strange brew and for me hard to rate because it is not my style. Partly pleasant fruity, partly a unpleasant soy note. But all in all a good, complex brew.

The aroma had vinegar, dark fermented fruit, and vinious notes. THe flavor had roast, slight coffee, and a big vinious note. THe beer poured an opaque color w/ no head and lacing. THe mouthfeel was asstrigent and abrasive, but creamy and full bodied. Kinda like drinking soy sauce. crap.

Aroma was of as a kid shoveling silage from the silo to feed the cows in the winter. Some roasted flavor to it. Beer looked like drain oil from a vehicle. Label says complex yes it is.

2000 vintage Bottle poured black and looked like motor oil chuging out of the bottle. Light brandy like aroma with a strange alcohol flavor that I just can’t place but I only had a few drinks as overall this stout was nasty and I had to end up pouring it down the drain. Yuck

11.2 fl. oz., 2001 vintage. Pours nearly flat but shortly an army of fine brown bubbles rises to the oily surface. Very sour and musty aroma, Uh-Oh. Tastes like something that probably shouldn’t be drank. Thick and sour with flavors rotting, moldy fabric and sour tar. This bottle is bad.

12 oz. bottle, 2000 vintage. Opaque dark brown ruby colour with no head. Most port like aroma I’ve ever found in a beer, with raisin and plum fruitiness plus lightly acidic or oxidized port/sherry notes. Bittersweet chocolate, dark roasted coffee, salty, light acidity, and fruity flavours with a roasty bitter and lightly acidic finish. Full bodied, very smooth. A nice treat from IPFreely.
