Commercial Description:
Usually only available bottle conditioned as Imperial Extra Double Stout. Has occasionally appeared on cask as Harveys Imperial Russian Stout.
Also known as A le Coq Imperial Stout - bottle only.
Ingredients: Pale, Amber, Brown and Black malts; high levels of Fuggles and Goldings hops
"Regarded as one of the World’s most unusual and prestigious beers. The recipe contains a dense concentration of varied malts and hops to produce a bottle conditioned stout. This brew will improve over six months to one year to develop its complexity. This beer has an intense flavour which is complex and distinctive. The roast, alcoholic and spicy notes combine in this unusually sweet & sour beer."

High liquor like nose, woody with bitter hops behind. Minimal head, thick juicy ale. Dried plums , cherries , nice long lasting velvety flavours . Very vintage in style.

1999 Vintage courtesy of cornboy: Dark black body with a small dark tan head. Aroma is tart with notes of yeast(smells similar to de dolle), merlot, vinous grapes, cherry, chocolate, roasted malt. The taste is tart cherry, sour brett, wood, chocolate and roasted malt. Thick, oily body.

Vintage 2001.
Pitch black with a fine brown head. Penetrating lambic aroma with the characteristic tone of grapefruit and wood?!?!? I can’t believe this is a stout?! Heavy roasted flavor with dark fruit, soya, raisins and again that note of lambic. Extremely salty and almost undrinkable. This is just too weird, it doesn’t taste of infection, but I can’t believe it’s actually suppose to be like this?! I will have to try it again some day!

1999 Vintage - One look at the label and knew I wanted to try this Imperial Stout in a classic English bottle. It was left over from the Philly RB Gathering and after a few sips I knew why. Worstershire aroma, blackest black body. Oak flavor may be the best thing I’m tasting. Flavor was a major turn off for me. Oily soy sauce flavor that was hard to swallow.

1999 vintage. heavy tannic/anise nose. Lots of winey characteristics. Pity they don’t mesh well with the actual "beer" part of the beer. Distinct expreso/roast aftertaste, longloasting. Somewhat nasty immediate anise aftertaste. Sticky. Some fruit. Thank you cornboy! I just can’t dig it, though.

Earthy, sour, musty and damp, corked aroma. Opaque heavy brown body with no head whatsover. Chalky, salty, earthy, corked soya sauce flavour is acidic with some dark fruitiness and a roasty finish. Still and heavy with very light carbonation. Somewhat sticky in the mouth. Bottle sampled with MartinT and Olivier.

2001 bottle, deep black color, without foam, aromas of black chocolate, burnt toast, dry fruits of raisin, plum, winey, oaky, corky in the nose. Light and thin in the palate, the flavors are reminiscent of burnt toast, black coffee, dark chocolate, oak, cork notes, with a long finish of hop bitterness and burnt malt

2001 bottle, thanks duff. pretty dark. made a loud pop when it was opened. complex aroma of port, mudcake, chocolate cream and asphalt. plenty of burnt chocolate bitterness, woody port flavours and some curious rusty belgan style acidity. surprisingly thin texture, very warming, not much sign of sweetness which makes a nice change for an imperial. good stuff, i’m looking forward to cracking another ’01 bottle in a year or so
