gotohelunc (310), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Apr 29, 2008 2003 vintage bottle. Looks like oil in a glass...jet black, no head. Hugely powerful aroma of alcohol, wood, extremely burnt cheap coffee, and motoroil. Tastes like black licorice covered in teriyaki sauce, then boiled for 2 days, but with a lot more alcohol. And less tasty. I’ve had a lot of beers, some great, some really bad, but I don’t remember dumping a beer out in years. Even quite a few beers into the night, I couldn’t choke this one down. Just dreadful stuff all around. I never would have imagined my lowest rating ever would be on an English Imperial Stout.
gnoff (2522), Göteborg, Sweden Jul 6, 2008 (Bottle at a beer tasting in Göteborg on July 4, 2008) 2003 version as "A. Le Coq Imperial Extra Double Stout" Black color, light brown head. Mostly sour scent. Salty, sour, dry cocoa taste. Alcohol aftertaste. Warming alcohol. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bitterness. grandridge (105), Port Clinton, Ohio, USA Jul 5, 2008 Glugs out of the bottle like used moter oil out of an old motor oil can. No head at all. This beer actually has anti-head, there are a couple of bubbles but they are submerged beneath the black hole that is this beer. I don’t know how they got the head in the picture it must be a plastic display beer. Aroma is strange, alcohol, and some spice. Taste is almost like a wine not a beer. What is this? No carbonation at all, it feels and tastes like a wine in my mouth. Has some woody notes with some coffee was this aged in wood somewhere? Is this a sour? I taste vinigar. I’m so confused. The bottle label just gives me a a russian history lesson. I guess I like it but not in like with it. A good beer though. ATLBeerDog (133), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jul 1, 2008 Updated: Jul 2, 20082000 Edition - Pours black with a slight red tinge. Absolutely no head what so ever. Smells of chocolate and red wine. Virtually no carbonation even though the label says, "Bottle Conditioned." First taste is very sweet - almost wine like, with roasted malts, coffee and chocolate sharing top billing. Mouthfeel is awful due to the lack of carbonation. Corkscrew was needed to open bottle. azlondon (457), Greater London, England Jun 30, 2008 Appearance: Dark, dark brown. Very flat.
Aroma: Vinous, oaky. Tangy fruit. Treacle.
Taste: Vinous, oaky. Bitter, some fruit. Alcohol. Soily?
