Best Standard Dark Ale in the 2008 World Beer Awards. A traditional full malty ’Brown Ale’ with a creamy head. Mild hop notes with a lingering biscuity sweet palate give coffee and liquorice notes. A bitter sweet finish.

Bottle shared at the 6th annual Richmond Industry Gathering, 11/27/11. Pours a hazy copper color with a thin creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of toasted malts, floral hops, chocolate and a bitter finish. The taste is chocolate, floral hops, stone fruits and earthy notes. Medium bodied.

50cl bottle picked up in Hastings. Deep reddish chestnut with a beige head; aroma of treacle toffee; the flavour is nutty and earthy with a toffee sweetness and a rather thin body; then a light bitterness leaving a vinous finish with a touch of chocolate for good measure. Very easy drinking!

Cask at the Royal Oak, London. Dark brown color. Sweetish flavor with dark caramel, toffee, nuts and wine gums. A bit too caramelly for my taste.

Bottle from Harvey’s Brewery shop. Colour is dark brown with reddish tints. Nose is caramel malt, brown sugar. Taste on first sip is surprisingly bitter on tongue and then a sprinkling of brown sugar.

Rating from an old notepad. Bottle, 500ml. Brown with very little head. A very sweet and malty brown ale. Plenty of caramel, some berry fruit and that unmistakeable Harveys character from the yeast. In the background there’s some wood and its almost quite vinous. Very low carbonation.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2011 Cask (GBBF2011, Wed)
Very dark reddy brown, nice beige head. Slight pungent aroma, some hops, some sulfur, but pretty restrained. Sweet roasty taste, sugar and caramel, and loads and loads of apples. No hint of any alcohol, this is such an easy drinker, drinks like a mild. Finish caramelly, and a touch roasty.
Rerate: Cask (Market Porter, post-RBESG2011) (6:4:6:3:12=3.1)
Fruity and treacly aroma. Way too sugary. Under-attenuated and/or underconditioned.

Cask at the Royal Oak, RBESG 2011. Pretty orange-brown color. Nose of chocolate, figs, plum. Some port too, maybe. Winy and port-like flavor, plum, chocolate. Very tasty, with a light to medium tartness.

(£2.50). Clear very dark ruby red with a mocca coloured porous medium head leaving nice lacings. Sugary coka cola aroma. Thats it, coka cola with some faint chocolate. Disgusting. Taste is sweet malty with toasty rasted sugary notes. Medium body with low carbonation. Im getting tired of all this exessive sweetness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
