3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 chriso (7065) - London, - JUL 31, 2006
Bottled at the Royal Oak, Borough, June 2006. If you like your porters to be pseudo-stouts, as they often are these days, you probably won’t like this. If you prefer a more traditional old English style of porter this may be more your cup of tea. Very dark red/brown, with not much head. Intensely woody, with a touch more oxidation than I’d like, which may be down to the age of the bottle or the pasteurisation process. Some deep malt and soy sauce touches in the aroma. Light, dry and distinctly bitter on the palate with licorice and touches of powdery chocolate. Woody character persists in the mouthfeel. Authentic sour edge on the finish. "Old" tasting, but very interesting. However, the woodiness is just a touch overdone for my taste.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 EdKing (941) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - SEP 22, 2011
Bottle from Harveys brewery shop. Once again it’s the Harvey’s malt character that dominates this. Pours very dark brown/black with thin beige head. Nose is unusually caramel malt. Taste is caramel malt and roasted malt. Not getting much coffee or chocolate. They really should stop pasteurising these!!!
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 BeerViking (1055) - Brentford, Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 12, 2011
Bottle of 1859 Porter, I think the "best before" says FEB08 but it might be 03 or 05! Pours black and a bit oily with almost no head, treacle, toffee and a faint tartness on the nose, more treacle plus burnt caramel, a hint of milk chocolate, and roasted dark fruit on the palate. Burnt bitterness appears in the aftertaste along with a faint hint of coffee. Excellent for a 4.8% beer of its age.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 manuchampions (1163) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - FEB 26, 2011
Bottle from LCBO. Pours a very dark brown with a thin beige head and spotty lacing. Aroma is chocolatey cocoa and burnt malt. Medium-bodied and dry with roasted malt and chocolate flavours. The finish is sweet molasses and chocolate. Very good for style.
2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 AndrewC (265) - Canterbury, Kent, ENGLAND - DEC 10, 2010
Smells sour. Black with a decent head. Sour dark chocolate powder flavours. Some roasted notes. It’s alright I suppose.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Metalchopz (1429) - Quebec, CANADA - JUN 30, 2010
Purchased at the LCBO, as a one time deal. Best before date on cap is written JUN08 (originally reviewed March 2008). This English porter pours a dark brown colour with very little red highlights. Its head is foamy, but turns into a creamy beige one that decides to stay a while, leaving beautiful lacing all around, thick and bubbly. The aromas are on the plum side, with touches of burn malt and coffee. The mouthfeel is kind of oily with a tiny sticking, but refreshing overall. I really like the fact that the plum is not as present in the taste. It is more like coffee bitterness, molasse syrupy and a little chocolate. Well-balanced, beautiful English porter.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Vignale (913) - Malmö, SWEDEN - JUN 4, 2010
Kolsvart och en relativt lätt porter med undantag för den närmast brända och torra smaken av träkol. Intressant.
