COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Seasonal - March. Also available very occasionally bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the cask and bottle-conditioned versions should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the much more common pasteurised bottle version.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Cask (EBF2008)
Hoppy aroma, certainly some Burton snatch to it (Thanks, Silk, for the nose pointers!). Beef fat taste. Lovely soft palate, both savoury but with a nice tingle. Burnt flesh. Very wacky, but rather tasty.

Cask conditioned handpump Royal Oak Borough. A black beer with an almost beige coloured head. The nose suffers from acidity whereas the mouth is boozy and vinuous. It’s an old fashioned porter and probably divides opinion like the Imperial Stout. Although this didn’t taste the freshest it’s probably more about the way it’s intended. No roast or chocolate. Interesting but perhaps not quite what I like.

Full pint served at the right drinking temperature at Charlies Pub, Copenhagen. Creamy, fawn coloured head with a solid stand. Pitch black body colour. Dark malty aroma with subdued roastiness. On the sweet side of bittersweet flavour, roasted and dry. Weak bitter twist to the ending. Easy to drink. Perhaps not in its best cask condition (Copenhagen, 26.03.2010).

An ok and totally flat porter. It was more christmas-like that I had thought, with the seasoning and all, but not very sweet.

Cask (handpump) at the Royal Oak, Borough, April 2008. Quite dark with a slightly oily texture, although the mouthfeel is not particularly heavy. Fat malt aroma, with some woody notes and lots of figgy fruit, reminiscent of the Imperial Stout. Sweetish and woody on the palate. Also bags of licorice and a little chocolate. Little bitter tang in the aftertaste before the prunes and figs take over again. The slightly vinous, woody character persists throughout. Lots of depth and complexity maintain the interest from the first sip to the last. But also very quaffable. Top notch.

A Mes rate. Cask handpull at the Wenlock Arms.
Very dark brown with a good beige head and plenty of condition. Brimming over with molasses, liquorice, superb darkness all round with a lovely sourness in the finish plus tonnes of dark fruit. Massively tasty and on absolutely top form. Quintessentially English, glorious all round.
