Commercial Description:
Pasteurised bottle. Also available cask conditioned in March and, occasionally, bottle conditioned. Originally called 1859 Porter.
NOTE: Only ratings for the pasteurised bottle should be posted here. There is a separate listing for the cask and bottle conditioned (very rare) variants.
We have taken a porter recipe of 1859 from Henry Harvey’s brewing journal and reproduced it faithfully using pale ale malt, crystal malt, black malt, locally grown hops, our own spring water and yeast strain. We have subsequently bottled the beer in both pasteurised and bottle conditioned form. However, each March draught 1859 Porter is on sale for one month only as part of our programme of ‘Seasonal Brews’.

Pours a very dark brown almost black. Small head which sort of suprised me. Aroma of flavour of roasted malts, coffee, molasses, black licorice, chocolate. Finish is a roasted bitter taste. Pretty damn good porter.

A special treat from reakt in trade. A honey sweetness and reminder of fall in the nose. Pours dark....drk as a black steers toucous on a moonless prarie night. A reserved tight dense tan head sits upon the viscous liquid as if placed there by studious and certain hands. (feel free to use that one in yer ads Mr. Brewmaster). I will not bother to go into particulars about this lovely brew other than to say only the English are able to achieve this level of perfection with dark beers. My desire has been satieated. Again, reakt sank the Bismark with sending this one to me, so..... "The Hood found the Bismark and on that fatal day.....The Bismark started firing from 15 miles away! We’ve gotta sink the Bismark was the battle sound...but when the smoke had cleared away the mighty Hood went down." Ahhh Johnny Horton.

Pours a nice deep dark brown, nearly completely opaque with a thin creamy pale brown head. Smell is very prominent, lots of roasted malts. Some dark chocolate, some coffee, and a hint of raisins. Fllavour is very sweet at first, and a nice bit fruity too. Finish is bitter like coffee and dark roasted malt. Not much to speak of as far as hops go. It’s nice and chewy in the mouth, maybe a touch over carbonated. Nice beer though.

Pitch dark black with small creamy tan head that thins quickly. Faint roasted nut and molasses aroma. Carbonated dark burnt roasted bittersweet chocolate. Light on flavour with a bittersweet burnt roast aftertaste.

Pours dark ruby-brown with almost no head, aroma of burnt raisons. A bit flat, sweet, malty licorice and metallic. Finishes like bitter black coffee. Definetly not for me.
