Originally brewed in 1920 as Harvey’s IPA with an abv of 4.7%. In the 1930’s it went down to 4.0%. Then down to 3.0% during the war, but eventually settled on 3.5% in the 1950’s. (In 2003 a version named Harvey’s Long Man IPA in honour of the Long Man Morris Men was released.)
It is a well balanced, well-hopped bitter and was awarded First Prize at CAMRA’s Great British Beer Festival in 1990.

Pint pulled at The Crown Inn in Groomsbridge (Kent), a clear copper with a filmy head. An aroma of flowery malt. Peachy fruit flavours at first, with a bitter finish that brings more malt.

Cask at the Royal Oak, Borough. Amber with a fine lacy head, yeasty malty nose, crisp and malty body with refreshing hop bitter flavours and more yeasty notes. Lovely stuff.

Cask at Royal Oak. Amber golden colour with small white head. Aroma is a bit sock-like and a bit creamy. Slightly stinky/sulphur. Taste is malty, and a bit bready. Not much bitterness. Pretty unremarkable for me.

[cask at the Royal Oak, Borough, London] Brown pour, thin head. Nutty, bready aroma. Very much the English style Pale Ale – a slight sweetness with a decent hop flavour, but the malt contributes a lot, there’s a woody, caramel edge to it that compliments the hop character very well. Extremely sessionable, and really rather good [21092011]

Cask - The Royal Oak, Borough, London. Poured with a fine & disappearig white head atop an amber-copper coloured beer with a slight haze to it. Nutty, caramel, light mid fruit tang & sweetness with a metallic note on the aroma. Nutty & woody, lightly toasty with a lingering though delicate grassy, dryish finish. Light body, crisp mouthfeel & carbonation with a lingering mid fruit tang in the aftertaste. Ok, a bit thin with a light sulphur note rearing its head at times.

Dark yellow colored with little yellow head. Lemony and yeasty, only mildly bitter aroma. Thin to medium bodied. Flavor is also rather thin with samel lemony yeastiness, not very special beer to my taste.
