krisbierjaeger (837), dolores, Colorado, USA Jul 24, 2006 what a cool name: tom paine; one feels august and learned just to be swirling this in a snifter --as if i’d just taken a break from penning a great and impassioned political screed. actually i was just out cleaning up dog turds from around the yard, but still i feel enriched by this noble drink. there’s a wealth of aged-smelling malts to linger among, as you would among old books: these have the aroma of a hundred years of raisin residue on old drying wracks; there once was tobacco and whiskey as well, treacle, pecans, the crackly binding of ancient books, plus a ripe green note of pear skin. that fine, intriguing smell rises from a little keg of deep brown, a brew as dark as a cajun roux. the head was in a hurry to evaporate, but left a scattered blurs of lace, like a chalkboard erased in a few hasty strokes. barley wine-like roasty flavors turn out to be the root of those gentrified essences, they’re slightly sweet with dried plum, a touch of licorice, a dash of consumme´. regrettably, those malts preside over an awkward potency of bitterness: a crab apple bitterness that can’t quite justify it’s force. over a watery feel, the bitterness is rather stark-- in terms of a sweet little operetta, the ardor of the finale´ was well composed, but alas, they let a toad sing it.
bhensonb (3138), Woodland, California, USA Mar 27, 2008 Dark fruit aromas. Dark brown/mahogany color with a decent tan head. At least medium body with very fine carbonation. A bit vinous - almost like grape and plum, with smoothly roasted malt. Slightly sweet, a bit of nuttiness, and arguably floral hop. It’s really quite delicious. doubelknv3 (507), Illinois, USA May 13, 2007 Grap and licorise aroma. Brown-Black with quickly disappearing head. Very sweet, brown sugar malt flavours. Beerdedone (1626), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 23, 2007 Bottle sampled with Stegosaurus. Pours brown with a tan head. Aroma of nuts, caramel, and roast. The flavor is sweet, nuts, and mild roast. Good beer.
Holdwine (843), Beertimore, Maryland, USA Jan 14, 2007 Pretty average. far too sweet for even a brown ale. Nothing redeeming here. Tmoney99 (3740), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jan 1, 2007 Bottle. Pours dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that diminished slowly with fair lacing. Good malty toasted aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture. Heavy sweet complex flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration.
