Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Pours a pitch black with a lasting chocolate head. Aroma of wooden pizza paddle and present alcohol. Oh now! The taste is very heaven: smokey and chocolaty, sweet teryaki - wow! Warm finish. Soy? Good carbonation and coating, creamy body. Such a savory beer. Love! Thanks to TheCheeseMan for the trade!

A Mes rate: bottle from the ever imrpoving (and that’s saying something) Utobeer and shared with Sim at home.
Blacker than oil with a good tan head that settles quickly to a generous collar that’s going nowhere. It’s a good looking beer. Fantastic aroma. The Highland Park is clearly evident and the Old Engine oil is equally apparent. They meld really well and the end result is wonderfully rich and verging on decadent. Sumptuous chocolate, full of dark dried fruit, slight caramel, good earthy notes, brown sugar, clear brandy and maybe a hint of marzipan. Complex and hugely sniffable. Well worth a nine. The flavour is not quite as elaborate as the nose and just never quite feels properly integrated. The whisky still feels a little raw and the end result is that of the standard Engine Oil (which I must say, is still a good beer) with a bit of the Highland Park added rather than it being imparted following maturation. I would certainly like it if there was a little more of the barrel showing. That said it’s certainly an enjoyable experience. The palate is excellent and the glowing warmth on the way down is a delight. To sum up, a damn good beer but if the flavour matched the quality of the aroma it would be stunning.

At Funky Buddha. Black, viscous, scant tan lacing. Chocolate cake and peat aromas. Lots of peat with dark malt at the end of the flavors. Nice low carbonation. Great beer but I prefer the 16.

pours black, a few tan bubbles aroma is mostly kalamata olives, with some serious malt, alcohol, and a bit of nicely rotten fruit taste is mostly smoked kalamata olives, finish is long and bitter olive-y very thin dry finish smoke! bursting with scotch! after a few seconds it seems you’ve just had some pretty woody whisky of some sort

0,33l bottle. Black color, nice head. Gentle roasted malts, vanilla and tar in the aroma. Flavor is incredibly smooth, and all sorts of nuances are notable; caramel, coffee, smoke, and a hint of whisky as well. Nice warming alcohol in the finish.

330ml bottle (Kuikka, Helsinki)
Jet black, almost no head. Rich roasty aroma. Pleasant carbonation, but quite soft palate. Very rich burntness but without any astringency at all. No hint of 8% at all. Soft hint of chocolate. Hops only come in later, with just a bit of a tingle. Aroma is sweeter than the taste. Dry woodiness, but no blasts of whisky, unlike some of the less refined B.A.’s. Must rerate ...

12 Oz. I Don’t konw what an old ale is.... but Ilike it. Dark, impenetrable black color with a brownish espresso like cream head. Sweet aroma of molasses, tar, wood, leaf tobacco. Wonderful thick mouthfeel, peaty like taste, nice sweet maltiness balancing it out. Good, good, beer.
