TheBeerGod (3143), Newport News, Virginia, USA Oct 25, 2008 Bottle. Number 06568 from Sept. 2007. Opaque dark brown pour with mahogany edges. No head to really speak of on this. Soy sauce, raisins, burnt barbecue sauce, caramel, molasses, and wet wood in the aroma. Taste is vanilla, molasses, wood, raisins, light soy sauce and some smoke. Body is light and creamy. Very soft, almost faint carbonation. Finishes with more soy sauce, caramel, burnt barbecue sauce, molasses, dark chocolate, and oak. Nice! PilsnerPeter (2585), Flushing, New York, USA Oct 23, 2008 Bottle #05283 September 2007: Pours near black with a bubbly khaki head. The aroma is meaty with raisin, BBQ sauce, dark chocolate and only mild oak. Slick body with a fairly lighter feel than expected. Some roasted character in the flavor with a raisin/chocolate sweetness but it’s mild. The malt character is smooth and integrates well with the oak. The oak peeks through later on. Smooth and well balanced. Papsoe (14642), Frederiksberg, Denmark Oct 21, 2008 (Bottle 33 cl) Courtesy of yespr/Ungstrup. Dark brown with a tint of red and a rough, off-white head. Very burned malt aroam with some whisky accents. Full-bodied, a little low in carbonation. Plenty of burned malt and smoked whisky accents. Burned malty bitterness. 100908 KnutAlbert (3108), Oslo, Norway Oct 20, 2008 Bottle in NYC.
Very dark beer, small head that disappears fast. Strong whisky aroma.
Smooth beer, lots of vanilla from the oak underlines the sweetness. Warming alcohol edge. Very decent, but it is interesting that everyone is jumpin on the barrel aging trend now. msante79 (780), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA Oct 17, 2008 11.2 oz bottle. # 6022/Sept 2007. Pours Dark brown and appears black in glass with brown edges. No head. Aroma is molasses, dark fruits, coffee, dark chocolate, whiskey, burnt malt. Flavor is rich and complex. Lots of roasted malt, coffee, bakers chocolate, molasses, dark fruits, light whiskey notes. Mouthfeel is silky smooth. Finish bitter and a tad dry. Unique beer and cannot wait to try more old ales including the 16 and 30 Ola Dubhs. MoDog (909), Griffith, Indiana, USA Oct 16, 2008 Poured from an 11.2oz bottle (#05389/Sept 2007) and served in a snifter. This beer poured almost black with some faint ruby highlights. A thin, lasting head of large tan bubbles resulted from an aggressive pour. Slippery lace coated the glass, then quickly fell back into the drink. The aroma included molasses, plums, oak, smooth whisky notes, baker’s chocolate, and some charred malt. The flavor consisted of dried plums, oak, cherry pits, heavily roasted malt, and some very mellow whisky. The roastiness wasn’t bitter or abbrassive at all. The mouthfeel was lush and velvety smooth. Full-bodied with mild carbontion. This beer was all about balance. The roasted malt and the whisky blended together seemlessly, never getting in the way of one another. A pleasure to sip! BeerHawk (1175), Huntsville, Alabama, USA Oct 16, 2008 Bottle shared by Suttree at the Pre-Brewers’ Jam Warm-up. Pours black with a thin tan head that left light lace. Aromas of scotch backed with fruits and caramel malts. The flavor has dark fruits and chocolate. Medium to full body and smooth. Very Nice! lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 12, 2008 Suttree’s 2008 Pre-Brewer’s Jam Tasting. Sample from a bottle thanks to Suttree. Thick pitch black pour with a thin tan head with nice lacing and ruby glints at the edges. Burning smoky scotch aromas still leave some dark pit fruit and chocolate aromas of the Old Engine Oil underneath. Flavor is more peaty earthy flavors until the finish where roasty bitter malts shine through.
