4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 20/20 Jessop (128) - AUSTRALIA - JAN 23, 2012
Poured from bottle No 44174, deep dark brown with an amazing tanish thick pillowy head that lasted with great lacework down the glass. Champange like carbonation showing the finest of bubbles. The aroma produces sweetish caramel notes. The palate is absolutely wonderful, its a very very smooth beer, its creamy with notes of figs, spice, bitter chocolate and slightest hint of smoke. Outstanding!

My Bottom Line :
Intertwining smoke, wood, roast, peat and blackberry flavors lead to a lightly charred roastiness in the finish and an elegantly peat-y aftertaste.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-A sheet of foam lays atop the blackness with dark brown edges.
-A light chocolate undertow seeps from the malt mélange.
-The soft effervescence lets all flavors express themselves at will. But, amazingly, all show restraint. Truly classy from aroma to finish.
-I found this one softer and easier to sip on than the other versions of Ola Dubh. Just a wonderful lineup overall.
Bottle.

bottle #09340 dated July 2009 - Poured side by side with a 40 yr bottle. It’s dark brown with a small tan head. The aroma is rich in chocolate with notes of smoke. The whisky aroma is obvious on first opening and then seems to fade. The flavor is of sweet chocolate and smoky whisky with light carbonation, a bit lighter body than I expected, and a smoky finish. Good brew.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Davros (1024) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - JAN 3, 2012
Pours black with a large, light tan head.
Nose shows smoky peat, burnt caramel, figs and nuttty notes. The smoky character seems to a have a burnt rubber note to it though.
Lots more smoky peat as part of the flavours however the caramel is more pronounced making for a more balanced mix of characters. Some booze is noticeable in the soft whisky notes alongside cola.
Could do with more carbonation, very low at the moment.
A bit too smoky with not enough malt to balance it out.

Bottle. Dark brown colour with a great head. Aroma and taste of chocolate, malts, licorice, coffee and a great highland whisky. From my Backlog.

A nice reddish black hue with a thin and quickly fading tan head. The lack of carbonation gave it a nice viscus look. Aroma had great malt notes, a mix of caramel, roasted and mild chocolate. There was a nice peat quality to it and some wood. Flavor was initially sweet from both the caramel and chocolate malts. The roasted malts seemed to balance out the sweetness and was a great bridge to the flavors from the scotch. The peat and wood notes were enough to give the beer the right flavor without taking away from the malty goodness to it.
