COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle from Capone’s. Bottle #02879. Pours jet black with minimal brown head and a late head cascade. Nose is charred roasty malt, chocoff, blackberry, raisins, fine tobacco, mild rauch, and mild mothballs. Tastes charred, slightly rauchy dark malty, with coffee, dark choc, sizable hops, oaky scotch, and a general lack of carbonation. This one was interesting, and I can’t wait to try the 16 and 30.

Poured a dark mahogany color with a small, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of light peat smoke, wood, some vanilla, roasted malts, and chocolate. Taste of roast, chocolate, some peaty smoke, light vanilla, and some faint alcohol in the finish too. Creamy.

UPDATED: MAR 30, 2008 Bottle.

Pours dark rich brown, almost black, grey-tan head. Nice smoky peaty nose, barrel wood. The flavor nicely balances dark chocolates with the smoke, peat, and wood from the whisky. The flavors --- basically oil engine oil and peaty, smoky, whisky --- don’t blend particularly much but they complement one another surprisingly well. It may not be the match made in heaven that takes the whole way beyond the sum of its parts, but it works as far more than a novelty, and I’m pleased by that. The beer remains enjoyable throughout, a thick, rich, very nice mouthfeel, mildly carbonated, good body, gently warming more in the stomach than on the tongue or throat.

Good stuff, interesting drinking. I’ll probably be back eventually, despite the cost, at least to explore further the aromas and flavors that one has to offer.

Thanks to axilla for sharing this. Pours a deep brown with a medium creamy/bubbly tan head that left some lacing. Aroma of dark cherries, cocoa, molassess, light alcohol, oak and vanilla. Flavor was earthy, light smoke, woody, dark chocolate, some bitter notes and whisky.

Bottle #03307. Black with a spotty tan head. Nice whiskey vanilla nose with ashy black malt and smoke. Nice smooth mouthfeel. Good taste is a dry, almost burnt malt bitterness with lightly sweet vanilla whiskey sweetness in the finish. A nice beer, though i prefer a little more forward wood/booze flavors from a barrel aged brew.

(bottle, thanks Badgerben!) Pours a dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma is initially quite odd and smells just like a urinal cake, not too appealing. Thankfully this is only a brief smell and as the beer warms it disappears. The aroma then switches to barbecue sauce with some strong smokiness too. The taste was also very smoky with chocolate appearing and strongly asserting itself in the mid-palate, which then yielded to an incredibly long smoked/peaty finish. The mouthfeel is a little thin, and I would’ve scored the palate lower, but that incredibly long finish warranted a four. Overall, a pretty good beer.

If you are a vegitarian, and you like bacon, here you go. Great smokeyness. It does not warm as well as the 30 does. A great beer to try if you can get your hands on it.

Pours a very dark brown with only a slight head. You can still find the underlying Old Engine Oil that is not lost due to the barrel aging. Some of the integrity and characters that I like about the Old Engine Oil are lost. It is a thinner, less creamy version. There is a nice peat flavor that you would find in a nice scotch that saves this beer. Decent.

chocolate, roasty, slight citrus, alcohol, woody, aminimal head, medium sweetness, lightly bitter, lightly sour, light body, thin feel, soft carbonation. Very thin in body. Strong whiskey aroma that doesn’t make it into the flavor. Good overall. Pricey though.

a thick black pour with a a small brown head. bourbon aroma is evident with some rotting wood and chocolate. very earthy, moldy flavor giving way to a vanilla, chocolate, woody flavor. definitely a unique brew. creamy, low carbonated palate. not sweet but not bitter. i like it.
