Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

A bottle tasted at Angleterre. Coffee and tar in the nose. Brown head. Dark reddish black colour. Soft taste. Some vanilla in the nose. Also some oak and chocolate. After a sip of water- some hints of whiskey...

Pours a medium bodied, dark brown/black body with a small tan head. This was the weekest of the 3 in terms of aroma and flavor. Notes of choclate, sweet smoke, and dry oak with some very mild scoth flavors coming through in the finish.

12 oz bottle from Bev4less in Santee. Pours a blackish brown with a meager tan head that quickly fades to a tiny ring. The aroma was strong with anise, whiskey, dates, coffee liquor and molasses. The taste did not quite live up to the bold aroma. The flavors are subdued with whiskey, coffee and peat. Most of these flavors are on the the sides of the tounge but the tip and back are never rounded out for a full palate experience. The mouthfeel was full and creamy. The finish abruptly fell off short with a lingering malt pastiness. Overall: This one showed a lot of promise and had one of the best noses ever, but the flavor was too subtle for me, and left me with an empty feeling. I may age a bottle or two and re-evaluate later.

bottle, pours black with a thin to medium tan head. Sour prune and black cherry aroma with some cocoa and port wine. Roasted malt and dark bitter malt body lots of whiskey heat and flavor with some vanilla and oakyness. Nice, but I would love to see if the 16 or 30 are smoother.

Bottle #02299 9/2007 - Poured a very dark black-brown in color with only the thinest of a tan head that faded very quickly. Low carbonation. Aroma is of darkly roasted malts, oak, chocolate and vanilla. Flavor is smoky with the heaviness of very dark malt (black patent), woodiness and bitter chocolate. Lingering bitterness and woody flavors. Warming alcohol at the end. Decent...

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle (#05389/Sept 2007) and served in a snifter. This beer poured almost black with some faint ruby highlights. A thin, lasting head of large tan bubbles resulted from an aggressive pour. Slippery lace coated the glass, then quickly fell back into the drink. The aroma included molasses, plums, oak, smooth whisky notes, baker’s chocolate, and some charred malt. The flavor consisted of dried plums, oak, cherry pits, heavily roasted malt, and some very mellow whisky. The roastiness wasn’t bitter or abbrassive at all. The mouthfeel was lush and velvety smooth. Full-bodied with mild carbontion. This beer was all about balance. The roasted malt and the whisky blended together seemlessly, never getting in the way of one another. A pleasure to sip!

Pours a dark brown body with a thin ring of tan head. Awesome flavors of smoke and bacon. Little dry on the finish.
