Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle #2749 poured into a snifter. Almost completely black, the only exception being a slight ring of brown when held up to strong light. Creamy tan head of about a finger, not much lacing. Aroma is earthy dark malt and subtle whiskey. I like that the scotch hasn’t completely overridden this brew but rather serves as a nice complement. Cinnamon makes an appearance too. Flavor is great but just a bit too faint. The oak really stands out, melding well with the chocolate and roasted flavors. I don’t detect any fruitiness, which is odd for an old ale. The glaring thing about this beer’s mouthfeel is the thinness of body. It may look really viscous but it’s quite light. It makes the drinkability insanely high, but it doesn’t lend a lot of support for a tasty blend of flavors. Maybe the other reserves will be thicker.

pours dark black with ruby tones at the edges. Very thin tan head. Aroma is chocolate roast malt, some molasses, vanilla and dark cherry tones. a whiff of alc. Flavour is lighter than I expected it to be. Mouthfeel is a touch oily feeling. Very smooth initially, tangy sweetness, some smokey peaty tones towards the finish. Woody hop. Definitely a Whiskey profile as it warms more and more.

Black pour with a thin tan head. Young whiskey aroma. Flavor is more whiskey, chocolate, peat, smoke, and caramel. Finishes pretty chewy, slightly boozy

Got this at Sam’s in Chicago last week. Poured with a tan head and some lace. Has very pleasing color highlights. Looking straight through it’s about opaque. Nice roasty, whiskey, malt, chocolate, ripe dark fruit nose. Flavor’s the same but much more full. Really pick up the whisky and a bit of oak. Little sweet on tongue sides and tip. Great body and carbonation. Boozy. Nice long rich finish. No way a session. Great for after dinner or on a dreary day.

Bottle: 02048 Sept. ’07: The best of the three (12, 16, 30 year). A very nice smooth combination of fruitiness with nice Scotch maltiness. Great munchiness in the taste. Ending is somewhat like coffee, but again with that lovely scotch accent. Overall, the best of the three to balance taste variation with exoticness. Very nice accents of peat, malt, dark fruits (plums, dates etc...), with a rich malt and almost caramel ending that’s accented with a good 12 year Scotch (I recommend Glenlivet’s 12 year). I really wish more breweries would age their beers in Scotch barrels as it’s my favorite whisky. *hopes*

Pours a pitch black with a lasting chocolate head. Aroma of wooden pizza paddle and present alcohol. Oh now! The taste is very heaven: smokey and chocolaty, sweet teryaki - wow! Warm finish. Soy? Good carbonation and coating, creamy body. Such a savory beer. Love! Thanks to TheCheeseMan for the trade!

11.2 oz bottle. # 6022/Sept 2007. Pours Dark brown and appears black in glass with brown edges. No head. Aroma is molasses, dark fruits, coffee, dark chocolate, whiskey, burnt malt. Flavor is rich and complex. Lots of roasted malt, coffee, bakers chocolate, molasses, dark fruits, light whiskey notes. Mouthfeel is silky smooth. Finish bitter and a tad dry. Unique beer and cannot wait to try more old ales including the 16 and 30 Ola Dubhs.

Black pour with nice ring but small head. Aroma is definitely whisky in nature, with bitter chocolate flavor up front, finishing with molasses and malt.
