Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Carolina Crew tasting! Bottle courtesy of Tom! Thanks! Dark brown pour with minimal beige head. Sweet malts combined with oak and whiskey on the nose. Nice roasty flavors with notable hints of whiskey.

Bottle. Enjoyable Old Ale. Contains some sweet roasted malts in the aroma. Taste is sweet malt, chocolate, a few hops sneak in there as well. You can also taste the results of the cask aging, with a slight whiskey flavor as well. ABV is noticeably present, but not too much. A pretty good British beer that will make me go try Old Engine Oil as well.

September 2007 bottle number 03151. Pours with a brown creamy head covering a black body. Pours like motor oil. Some spider lacing. Aroma of vanilla, wood, coffee and whiskey. Strong oak in the taste aswell as porter style dry coffee. Some vanilla in the back aswell. Not nearly as complex as I was expecting. Creamy mouthfeel with light bubbles. Alcohol is well hidden in the taste. A bit too much wood in the taste, felt like I might get splinters from drinking this beer.

bottle, pours black with a thin to medium tan head. Sour prune and black cherry aroma with some cocoa and port wine. Roasted malt and dark bitter malt body lots of whiskey heat and flavor with some vanilla and oakyness. Nice, but I would love to see if the 16 or 30 are smoother.

At Funky Buddha. Black, viscous, scant tan lacing. Chocolate cake and peat aromas. Lots of peat with dark malt at the end of the flavors. Nice low carbonation. Great beer but I prefer the 16.

330ml Bottle - Black in colour, with a tan head. Malty and roasted aroma with hints of raisins and plain chocolate. Rich and slightly hoppy taste with roasted malt and plain chocolate being detected. Tasty and easy to drink.

Pours a deep and evil viscous motor oil black with small brown head. Aroma of whisky, malt, roasted barley and fruits. Flavor of barley, molasses, whiskey meld with a fruity flavor and all combine into this well put together brew. Now if it wasn’t so damn expensive I’d do it again.

Bottled. Black, thin and fading tanned head. Clear oak nose, some whiskey and burned maltiness. Flavor is rye pudding, dark chocolate and mild barrel. Dry burned finish with black espresso later on. Whiskey isn’t as apparent here as in the aroma. Medium bodied, strong and a bit harsh carbonation for the style. Old engine oil is perhaps a bit too thin for the barrel, and this result sure ain’t the most complex one. A pleasant sipper anyway.
