Dorwart (1647), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Jun 6, 2008 Thin dark brown head of varying sized bubbles. Settles nicely but I think that any carbonation that was in there has been expelled in the pour. Sweet malts, dark chocolate cherry cordial, a hint of smoke and earthy notes and some roasted cashews. Color is a very dark brown. Thick and chewey on the palate. Lots of roasted grains, peat and a bit more smoke. Light scotch overtones and alcohol presence. Kind of lifeless though. Some roasty biterness late swallow. Finshes strong, roasty and alcoholic. A decent old ale but this seems like that aged it in the barrel for 12 years. I expected a bit more from this brew. Still very good though.
fonefan (5558), Ulfborg, Denmark Dec 3, 2008 Bottle 11.2fl.oz. Clear dark red brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, burnt, peat - smoke, whisky. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long to average duration. Aroma: Smokey chocolate malt. Flavor: Smokey chocolate malt, scotch. Bitter-sweet finish. marchcow (523), Coralville, Iowa, USA Oct 30, 2008 Rich aroma with orangish and chocolaty accents, some mild dried fruits, caramelized sugar, liquorice, and woodiness. Dark brown with minimal head. Rich woody flavor of good long duration. Not a lot of complexity. Some brown sugar, chocolate, smoke. Single pleasant note stays on the tongue a long time. Carbonation is mild. Palate is smooth, not too heavy, but thick enough. Drying slightly on the finish. A decent winter warmer before bed. TheBeerGod (2874), Newport News, Virginia, USA Oct 25, 2008 Bottle. Number 06568 from Sept. 2007. Opaque dark brown pour with mahogany edges. No head to really speak of on this. Soy sauce, raisins, burnt barbecue sauce, caramel, molasses, and wet wood in the aroma. Taste is vanilla, molasses, wood, raisins, light soy sauce and some smoke. Body is light and creamy. Very soft, almost faint carbonation. Finishes with more soy sauce, caramel, burnt barbecue sauce, molasses, dark chocolate, and oak. Nice!
