COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

I really dig Highland Park whisky and I always have a bottle of Highland Park 12yr in my cupboard, So I am very excited about this brew! Pours a deep rich murky black body and a wispy tan head. The aroma notes of roasted malts, coffee, coco and largely suggests the peat smoke and whisky barrel. I enjoy the way that the Whisky barrel interacts with the characters of the old ale in the flavor. Seems like less oxidation on the beer, but I’m sure it’s just the whisky overpowering the roasty oxidized malts. The palate is sticky and oily, a bit gritty. Finishes dry yet molasses sweet. A fine brew indeed!

Loppupuoleltaan kevyesti kuivattavan katkera. Melko täyteläinen suutuntuma, mutta todella pehmeä kokonaisuus, alkoholi pysyy täysin piilossa. Erinomainen nautiskeluolut toimii parhaiten lämmettyään riittävästi.

Bottle. Oily black, with no head. Aromas of chocolate, deep nutty roast, alcohol, Christmas pudding fruit, whiskey and oak. Luscious mouthfeel, full of dark dark chocolate, heavy malt, alcohol and plenty of smokey, whiskey and wood. Lovely winter sipper.

(33 cl bottle bought for 10 USD @ Mikkeller Bottle Shop; BBD: October 2018; L0510; Bottle #14333; Bottled in April 2015) Poured at fridge temperature into a Maisel & Friends footed tulip glass reveals a pitch black body with two fingers of creamy, tan head that fades somewhat within the first minute yet leaving a foamcap and lace. Aroma has roasted malt and some oxydised sherry notes and a hint of smoke. Oily texture, soft carbonation, medium to full body and a lingering finish. Flavour has sweetness but also lots of aroma complexity. The whisky imprint on this one is quite distinct and pleasant.

Aroma: sherry barrels and oporto, figs, dried fruits. Appearance: deep amber color and creamy head. Taste: low herbal bitterness, roasted dark malts, barrels, oporto, figs, bitter chocolate, quite dry. Palate: medium body and medium carbonation, barrel finish. Overall: Really good stuff, complex barrel aged old ale, nice dried fruits and barrel notes.

Bottle no 24190, Feb 2014. L0503. BB March 2017. Pours darkish brown with a steady, medium in size, beige head that leaves some scattered lace. The aroma is pleasant, alas a bit subdued (till the end), giving off notes of chocolate powdery and roasty malts and (cheapish) whisky; tastes likewise with sweet chocolaty notes most dominant, and the slightly salty whisky playing second fiddle. In the finish the whisky is not too convincing, feels a bit like those chocolate sweets with a drop of whisky inside.. Soft on the palate, with thin and modest carbonation. Overall... doesn’t seem as multilayered and enjoyable, say, compared to the 16 YO I had nearly two years ago (and probably rated a bit too optimistically at 4.2), or other BA brews that I’ve had in the meantime. It is very good though, but I hope the 18 YO will be a lot better.

I really liked the others in this series but this one was rather disappointing. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy beige head that left decent lacing. The aroma was sweetish and malty with notes of caramel, molasses, whiskey and a touch of chocolate. The flavor was bitter and malty with wood and whiskey notes. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Ok.

Black oily pour with zero head. Very low carbonation. Nice smell of whiskey barrel but not real volatile. Dark roast taste. Nice. More porter style than what I typically think of as old ale.
