Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Is a black, oily pour out of the bottle. Burnt aromas, chocolate, peat and smoke. Starts with a sweet touch of scotch and becomes more dry-roasted chocolate bitterness on the finish. Full-bodied and low carbonation. Nice.

Bottle from Warehouse on McConnell. Deep black with nary a hint of light showing through, smallish tan head that disappears after a minute and some viscous lace. Looks like the black oil it says it is. Peat and smoke highlight the smell with molasses, booze and earth adding to the complexity. Taste is similar, as the burnt fireplace log is prominent with a very assertive and pleasant contribution from the whiskey. Medium body, no carbonation to speak of, silky smooth mouthfeel and a smoky boozy finish. Terrific example of a wll-crafted whiskey barrel-aged beer.

bottle at home. Pours black with a small greyish beige head. Intensely roasted nose and cold barbecued meat (no shit), burnt ashes and some smoke. Medium body, a tad watery. Taste is sweet roast, and ashy smoke at the end. Nice.

From a bottle in Edinburgh. Body is a bit too thin and I wish the flavor were closer to the aroma in terms of richness and strength. Other than these two mild complaints, this is a great beer. Prudent use of barrel aging adds some nice complexity, including hints of whisky (of course), wood and vanilla. Very smooth with the alcohol partly hidden (but high ABV is obvious).

Black with some faint dark ruby red hues and a frothy tan head. Aromas of roast malts, chocolate are up front but also notes of coffee, vanilla fudge with some light honey, liquorice and black olive influences are noticeable. Retronasal the heather woody part shines well through. Softly carbonated with a slick texture and a medium-full body offer at first a light short sweetness which moves quickly forward to a roast herbal bitterness with some coffee astringency following through. Lasting finish. Well concipated especially the heather honey vanilla notes of the highland park 12y are noticeable here.

Bottled. Pours black with a little, tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, whiskey, spicy notes and a little smoke. Sweet flavor, that ends up more dry with a hint of bitterness. Soft carbonation, full bodied and oily texture. A very nice ale indeed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️&#

First crack of the bottle gives a really great peaty smell, I wish I got more of that after the initial. But I'm getting so much more on the palate than other beers, it's got great woodiness throughout and a delicate smoke across it. In terms if the porter itself, I tried the original "Old Engine Oil" years back, it was great, this softens the heavy Fist of that old dog, and this gives it an extra element that I love.
