COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle. Tasted side by side with Ola Dubh 30. Dark black in a snifter. Aroma is a bit more restrained than the 30 with leather and white chocolate then hints of ash and earth. Medium bodied and slick on the tongue. Smoke in the flavour with peat, oak, baker’s chocolate and dry espresso. Medium and very dry finish.

New Year?s Eve tasting Flight (2 of 3 10:20p)) Bottle 02001/Sept 2007 - At most a ring of foam around the glass for a head. Body looks like coca cola. Aroma of melting dark molases. Slight alcoholic feel. Burnt flavor. Mouthfeel slightly thicker than the 12yr variety.

Pours totally black with a creamy light brown head. Aroma is roast malt, with coffee, dark fruits and more pronounced notes of whisky than the 12 year. Taste is also roast malt and once again more pronounced whisky than the 12 year, coffee with notes of alcohol leading to a slightly dry but sweet and woody finish. Really amazing.

Licorice, dark fruits, whisky, smoke and roasted malts. A bit sweet. This was an excellent purchase although the price in the bar was a bit high. Not quite as good as the 40 yo version but not far from it.

Bottle from Nugget (on clearance!?!). Poured pitch black with a light creamy tan head. Aroma is chocolate, dark fruit, light smoke and sweet caramel. I loved the whiskey flavor with some tobacco and chocolate notes. Excellent beer.

Bottle enjoyed at home from a nosing glass
Dark brown, black in glass, medium tanned head. Aroma has some peat and tar from the barrels, also roasted malts. Taste has the peat/smoke followed up by the heavy malts. Some sweetness also applies. The taste is sooo smooth, in the background some chocolate also appears just in time. Nice. Nice oily palate. Finish has a short discrete bitterness. Totally a very nice BA old ale. Glad i have one more of this gem

Black pour with a small brown head. Aroma was great notes of whiskey and wood, lots of wood. Great whiskey. Light roast. Flavors were woody and whiskey forward with a light roasty finish. Bitterness was light and welcoming. Lots of whiskey up front, like a light scotch. Not much to this one, a bit one dimensional but quite good. Mouthfeel was a bit thin which docked it a few points here and there.

bottle 06936 (09/09) @ home 5/11/11 Interesting aroma on this one- red wine and coconut. Flavours more in keeping with a dark beer, treacle and black pepper, but alcohol less noticable. Zingy carbonation.
