COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle. Really nice packaging. Pours a deep dark brown body with a small tan head. Aroma has peaty whisky and some roasted malt. Taste is also driven by peat and smooth malt. Very mellow, also the carbonation is quite soft. Finish has some woodiness and light ash. Very smooth, I expected the flavours to be stronger. It is definitely nice but I’m not as blown away as I hoped to be.

Un-Muzzling Olde Muzzlehatch Ratings, #8. Bottle from...somewhere...sampled in January, 2009, Burlington VT, starting out at cellar temperature, in a Maudite glass. Deep, near-opaque walnut in color, with a darkish, small beige head that recedes fairly quickly, leaving a bit of residue...the aroma is deep as well, oaky-caramel, aged soft whisky and gracious with light hints of nuts and blueberries...the boozy character is stronger on the palate, sherry alongside whisky, vanilla mixing with fortified grapes and a tart, tannic acidity near the end...the alcohol is rather forward throughout though I would not say overwhelming...the finish has a sharpness that is a bit rough, almost unpleasant, and takes a while to go away, though I will say this improved in the 45 minutes it took me to drink it.

Butelka. Barwa praktycznie czarna nieprzejrzysta. Piany brak. Aromat na pierwszy niuch przypominający portera. Dużo ciemnych słodów, kawa, lekka czekolada. Po ogrzaniu dają o sobie znać nuty mokrego drewna, whisky w postaci torfu i popiołowości. W smaku lekka słodycz. Delikatne nuty whisky, kawa.

Lekre saker for snille gutter.
