COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle. Really nice packaging. Pours a deep dark brown body with a small tan head. Aroma has peaty whisky and some roasted malt. Taste is also driven by peat and smooth malt. Very mellow, also the carbonation is quite soft. Finish has some woodiness and light ash. Very smooth, I expected the flavours to be stronger. It is definitely nice but I’m not as blown away as I hoped to be.

Bottle at an Ola Dubh vertical. Pours a very dark brown color. The scotch here is really starting to come through, as well as some chocolate. Taste really has the peatiness come through with the wood, and ends up being super smooth. Very nice.

Bottle:   More chocolate than the 12, less tobacco and prune.   Leather, some peaty notes.   Malty, more scotch like, smoother than 12.   Nice stuff.   Thanks Matt!

DWG; Pours black with a short lived tan head. Intense nose of roasted malt, caramel, smoke, dark, dried, ripe fruits, alchol, sweets, yeast, more barrel oak than the 12 reserve version, coffee, chocolate, smoke and licorice. Taste is moderate to heavy sweet, umami and light bitter, chocolate and coffe lasting finish. Body is medium, texture is oily to creamy, carbonation is flat.

12oz bottle - I’ve always enjoyed my times with Engine Oil, and while I did enjoy this beer I thought it was lacking in a few things to give a better score. Aroma had some light acridness, wet dog, tobacco, wet dirt and very light whisky notes. Flavor was centered squarely on a worty, whiskyish flavor with notes of iodine, light boiled veggies, toffee and caramel also present. I did enjoy the fullness of the body of this beer, but it lacked any head formation and looked like a stout w/o carbonation. Coated my glass nicely.

330ml bottle. Black dark brown colour, foam beige head leaving alittle lacing and aroma of malt, treacle, dark fruit, nutty, earthy, woody. Taste is sweet malty, nutty with some brown sugar & chocolate, smoke, peaty, boozy, some bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, warming smokey finish. Very drinkable.
