COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle. Really nice packaging. Pours a deep dark brown body with a small tan head. Aroma has peaty whisky and some roasted malt. Taste is also driven by peat and smooth malt. Very mellow, also the carbonation is quite soft. Finish has some woodiness and light ash. Very smooth, I expected the flavours to be stronger. It is definitely nice but I’m not as blown away as I hoped to be.

330ml bottle @ the Tenth Shrewsbury Bottle Share, courtesy of Simon. Pours nice and dark. Peated / chocolate cake aroma. Hugely complex taste, enveloping and captivating with a swirl of whisky hints drawing you in with a nutty warmth. Very impressed with this. Thanks Si!

330ml bottle: 03442 April 2013. Broached between 5 on 8th Dec 2014, cheers Simon for bringing this to the Shrewsbury Bottle Share meeting. Dark and inviting look, but who wants to stare at a beer like this? The aroma draws you in, a huge peat bog of a smell, with a whisky hint in amongst the roasted malty esters of chocolate, liquorice and dark fruits. Taste starts fairly sweet and then a mini-sourness arrives to calm down the sweetness, a wine like depth to the flavouring gives a warm feeling in the mouth and stomach: just a great beer really.

Dark in color. Slight smoky nose to it. Porter like in body and taste. Very well balanced with hops and malt. Slight smoky finish that doesn’t linger.

Piana drobna, brązowa, szybko opada. Kolor mocnej kawy, ciemnobrązowy, nieprzejrzyste. W aromacie gorzka czekolada, lekka słodycz, wyraźne nuty dębowe. Trochę garbnikowe. Przypomina zapach gorzkawych orzechów, trochę jak wytrawna nalewka orzechowa. Trochę wędzone. Lekko przypomina whisky.

Bottled Feb.2012. Opened Nov.2014. Pours black with a chunky light brown head. Aroma is rich, malty, sweet. Sherry. Soy sauce. Molasses. Chocolate. Raisin. Light smokey. Flavor not quite as engaging as aroma. Much less sweetness. More of the peat, whiskey and oak show up, with accompanying chocolate. medium body. Not sticky or cloying. Pretty smooth. Nice smokiness. Some oaky dryness. Nice complex whiskey character. A nice treat.
