COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Nose of malt and whiskey. Pours a deliciously black colored liquid with nice head. The head is white with a hint of brown in it, but disappears quickly. Not as complex as i remembered in taste. First a round and malty taste, which turn to sweet maltish whiskey flavour. Aftertaste not to good (dry/astringency). The mouthfeel is not as viscous and extreme as i had hoped with a name that translate to "black oil". All over a nice beer. I don’t like it when barrel aged beer get to much alcohol taste, and this does a good job there

0,33L bottle, BB 12.2015. Pours very dark brown with brown head. The head doesn’t stay. Aroma is dark chocolate, roast, vanilla, and oak. Taste: malt, smoke, sweetness, wood, and dark chocolate. Finish is smoke bitterness and some alcohol burn. Overall: very nice brew, less sweet than 12 year old; very drinkable for ABV.

Black and oily with virtually no head. Aroma is molasses, wood, soy sauce, hint of leather and smoke. Very smooth on the palate, oily mouthfeel, sweet with only a hint of booze. Taste is raisins, wood, chocolate, prunes, hint of anise. Yummy

Like motor oil black. Great smell. Not too strong. Smooth taste, not overpowering like others. Smoke flavor.

11.2 oz bottle. Aroma is booze and a sweet dark malt. Appearance is black. Taste is a dark stout with some bourbon mixed in. Palate is smooth for a bourbon barreled stout. Overall, a good, even aged stout. Pretty thin, though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Watson. Pours a deep dark opaque black with a ring of light tan head. Aroma of raisins, caramel, and booze. Taste pretty much similar with an oak hint that masks a bit of the abv.

Really opened up with temperature. The barrel and scotch flavors were hard to spot but opened up later. As a new scotch drinker, I appreciate those notes. It seems this is more of a porter than a stout, and unfortunately, I feel that porters are just worse stouts. Chocolatey nose Licorice sweetness, no roast, and a slightly spicy mouthfeel despite no carbonation or head, which was pretty cool. Dark as night color.

Barwa: ciemna, praktycznie nie prześwitująca. Piana jasno beżowa, niezbyt obfita, drobno pęcherzykowa, szybko opadająca. Wysycenie niskie. Aromat: wyczuwalna wanilia z łagodną nutą alkoholową. Następnie akcenty melanoidynowe (z czasem zanikają) i jakby tytoniowe. Całość jednak odrobinę mniej wyrazista niż w 12. Smak: wyraźnie słodki, jednak z wytrawną kontrą. Występują zatem nuty opiekane, toffi, ciemne owoce, łagodna czekolada, kawa i alkoholowy, delikatny koniec. Nieco kwaskowe i momentami jakby ściągające.

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2014 Pours dark with a head that disappears. Aroma is oak, booze, and dark fruit. Taste is dark fruit, barrel, and chocolate malt. There is a bit of sourness and oxidation in the taste. Borderline infected?
