COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

1600th rating. A all black body and a beige head that had some retention and mild lace. Aroma was a good mix of roasted and caramel malts. Nice hints of oak peat with a mild alcohol note. Flavor had a nice roasted malt flavor upfront there was mild sweetness but mostly roasted malts. A nice flavor from the alcohol was in the background and it seemed a little more pungent then 8%. Some mild vanilla in the back along with a good peat note in the after taste. Body seemed thing but had a little more viscosity to it. A nice warming finish to it from the alcohol. Good beer.

This ale has neither head not aroma. It is very dark; like a black ops rather than a stout. It is smooth and not bitter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Blackish beer with very little head. The aroma is very malty with vinous elements and a mild degree of roastedness. The flavour is rich with spiced and malty roastedness elements. Overall a reasonable roasted and malty beer with a fair degree of bitterness, ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a black colour. Liquorice and oily on the palate, some coffee, some wood. Not much whisky flavour. Disappointing

Bottle. Black with creamy beige head. Coffee, dark chocolate, hay, marzipan, fresh baked brown bread, raw green beans, light smoke, whisky, very dry ashy touch. Quite sweet but towards the finish more dry with a bitter kick. Medium bodied with initial velvety feel that ends way more dry. Very nice.

Pours a deep burnt umber color with a finger of khaki foam. The nose is sweet brownie, some dark fruit and a trace of earthy barrel character. The palate follows with lots of balance between brownie batter and vanilla kissed whisky. Undertones of dates and leather. Long round finish. Smooth silky body
