3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Finally found the missing one of these brews (years) in the States, at Total Wine in Summerlin, Vegas. Bottle No. 10023 on FEB 2012. Pours a dark brown colour with a frothy-bubbly mocha head, good retention and thick creamy lacing. Big nutty aromas with lots of dark fruits, but I do not feels the smokiness in this one. Well, at least not much. More molasses and hints of fruitcake. A little warming in the mouthfeel with a nice touch of dryness from the hops. Still, too wet overall. Taste is little mild compared to the nose, but still lots going on, with the blend of dark fruits, nuts and hoppy finish. Glad I could try this, but thatís good for this one.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Will have to try the 12, 16, and 18 side by each to determine, as my memory isnít good enough to properly distinguish. There are so many things about this beer that make me happy. Firstly, a traditional scots beer from a real scots brewery aged in a kickass distilleryís whisky casks. Secondly, the flavour is just so intricate and awesome. Bottle 341ml. 8%. Rich dark brown-black pour with a weak white head that bubbles away quickly, no lacing. Aroma is earthy - presence of toasted barley, chocolate, coffee grounds, mild peaty smokiness.Mouthfeel is clean, low carbonation, medium alcohol warmth. Taste is a depth of chocolately, nutty roast malts, tinge of peat smoke, and tremendous character from the wood of the whisky casks - vanilla, oaky. A tremendous brew worthy of high praise.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours pitch black with a fine and dense tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and whisky. Taste is like the aroma but also with notes of fruits, caramel, vanilla and a hint of licorice and peat. Has a smoky whisky aftertaste. Pretty full bodied for an 8% beer. Low carbonation. Itís called an "old ale" but this is really a porter. And a good one too. The whisky flavour makes it a real sipper. I like it.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle date of July 201. Little to no light pass through this dark "oily" beer. With a nugget colored heAd that disappeared quickly. Has a very smooth flavor and palate. For a dark beer it is surprisingly not filling.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20
UPDATED: FEB 15, 2014 Pours like old used up motor oil. Thickest beer Iíve ever seen. Looked so promising. The head looked incredible. Love the label on the bottle. 18 yr highland park... whatís not to like. Except this bottle seemed off. I couldnít even finish it. Maybe I had an off day, but this was bad. I love strong Belgians, though this was my first old ale. It just didnít seem quite right. Iíve got another bottle. I like peet smoke in scotch, I like espresso flavours, I like that it poured like motor oil. But the taste was so astringent taste causing it to be nearly undrinkable for me. Too bad.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Toffee and chocolate roast notes on the nose, no hop aroma. Appearance is black with a thin tan head. Flavor is caramel, with toffee, chalk, med bitterness with wood notes and a touch of whisky, (you would never know is was 18 yr. Old Scotch barrels) finish is dryish. Overall... over rated but still good, not worth the $13+/11oz bottle or whatever I paid for it, but was on vacation, so whatever.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle #11133 of Feb 2012. Black, no head. Smell - molasses, smoke, slight whisky, some marmite. Body - medium, quite rich, low carbonation. Taste - chocolatey, vanilla, whisky is mild. Very smooth, nice balance to it and very drinkable. Strangely, itís less complex than the 12, but itís smoother.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle 33cl. Small brown head disappearing. Opaque color. Aroma of oak, mozartkugel, gunsmoked whiskey and roasted malt. Taste is still malt and whiskey with a fugdy touch, but taste is not as powerful as either expected or aromawise.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from October 2012. Pours thick black with lovely brown, oily and fizzy head that dissipates quickly. Nose is coffee, molasses, dark fruits, vanilla. Much the same in the mouth, some small hint of the booze which surprised me as I didnít remember that from the previous occasions Iíve had this beer. Very molasses, a little nutty. Heavy and slick, with that Orcadian smokiness coming through on the finish. Developed a cold overnight after drinking this so my taste and smell were probably compromised when I had this. Should try again as my memory was of a much better beer than this tasting.
