COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or "Black Oil") is so named because it is gloopy and viscous. This limited release has been matured in casks from Orkney’s award-winning Highland Park distillery to add complimentary whisky notes to what is already an amazing brew. It is chocolatey with a roasty, bittersweet aftertaste. Special Reserve 18, whisky notes: Highland Park 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky was named Best Spirit in the World by F. Paul Pacult; it offers toffee sweetness, almond nuttiness and a prolonged, smoky aftertaste.

Thanks Chuck! The beer pours to a pitch black body with a thin off white head. Aromas of chocolate and black licorice. Some peaty scotch. Flavor is chocolate and peaty scotch. There’s some light anise. Palate is medium-full bodied and has a clean texture. Quite smooth and nice.

Got one 11.2oz bottle for $10.38. Starts with a sweet Carmel taste with moves towards an alcohol, following up with a scotchy then Carmel finish. Seems smoother than the 12 year version.

Opaque pitch black colour with beige head. Aromas of malts and lactose and faint ash. Taste medium sweet and bitter. Oily mouthfeel. Little carbonation. Slight burn. Really not that great.

Poured from 330mL bottle (#08995 from Sept 2012) from BeerHouse in Johannesburg. Black with quickly dissipating beige head. Aroma has lots of chocolate with a bit of smoke. Same flavour, creamy, yet light texture. Wood notes. Mild alcohol. Subtle whiskey and soy sauce. Finish is average.

Bottle at an Ola Dubh vertical. Pours a very dark brown color. Nose has some chocolate coming through, with a fair amount of smoke, peat and scotch to it. Taste is quite warm, actually, with some nice scotch elements. Feels very smooth, and has some slight caramel at the end.

Bottle @ home. Opaque pitch black color, full sized lightly creamy light brown head that lasts for a long time and leaves good lacing. Aroma of malts, dark malts, leather, lightly peat, lightly wood. Taste malts, wood, dark malts, maybe a slight sweetish touch even and a hint of chocolate. Texture is oily, body is average to medium, carbonation is soft. Different from what I expected, but not bad at all.

33 cl. bottle poured in to a Snifter. Dark brown colour with a reddish tinge. Thin, lightly tanned head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass. Smoked aroma with roasted malts, whisky barrel, liquorice, light tobacco, bitter chocolate, subtle alcohol and slight peat. No doubt about the cask maturing. Taste is sweet and smoked. Excellent. Medium to full body with an oily texture and a flat carbonation. Long lasting, smoked finish with rich roasted malts, liquorice and whisky cask. Excellent - for the whisky lover.

Bottle:   Lots of peat coming out on this one.   As these progress they get smoother and smoother.   A touch of iodine showing up.   Soft dark chocolate.   Nice, but liking the 16 better.   Thanks Matt!

Poured from a 2012 vintage 330 mL bottle courtesy of Gunnar. Aroma is moderately roasty with some light chocolate notes. Quite a bit of cask character with some medium light oak character and moderate peat notes. Some fruit notes of raisins and prunes. Aroma definitely highlights the cask whiskey character. Pours a motor oil black with a small, moderately thick, light mocha head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it linger a bit. Almost no lacing with moderately long legs. Flavor is slightly sweet with a moderate roast and light chocolate character. Some medium light dark fruit notes of prune, plum and raisin with hints of berry and cherry. Again, quite a bit of cask character that adds a bit of sweetness. Moderate whiskey and peat smoke notes. Medium bitterness without any hop flavors. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied and rather silky with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an interesting stout that really allows you to understand the aroma and flavor of the spirits that the beer was aged in. The whiskey character is not overpowering, but definitely the highlight of the beer. The base beer is not as thick as I was expecting but its aroma and flavor contribute character while still allowing the whiskey notes to shine in an inoffensive way.
