COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or "Black Oil") is so named because it is gloopy and viscous. This limited release has been matured in casks from Orkney’s award-winning Highland Park distillery to add complimentary whisky notes to what is already an amazing brew. It is chocolatey with a roasty, bittersweet aftertaste. Special Reserve 18, whisky notes: Highland Park 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky was named Best Spirit in the World by F. Paul Pacult; it offers toffee sweetness, almond nuttiness and a prolonged, smoky aftertaste.

Thanks Chuck! The beer pours to a pitch black body with a thin off white head. Aromas of chocolate and black licorice. Some peaty scotch. Flavor is chocolate and peaty scotch. There’s some light anise. Palate is medium-full bodied and has a clean texture. Quite smooth and nice.

(Rating #1700) 330ml bottle, bottled in February 2012. Pours a deep, dark mahogany, with almost no head at all. Complex, developed aroma, roasted malt, wood, vanilla, ashes, licorice, candied sugar. Off-dry, full bodied, mid to high bitterness, low CO2. Complex, rosted taste, chocolate, oak, vanilla, light smoke, ash, faintly acidic, hints of tannins. Very nice, complex and balanced. Bottle 15976 from July 2011. Pours a thick black with creamy tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is whiskey, smokiness, faint chocolate and booze. Taste is like a bba smoked imperial porter, nice vanilla and chocolate notes from the whiskey and malt, smoky wood notes, nice clean finish. No real booziness and the smokiness kills the sweet. Very nice, well balanced.

Bottle split at Endo’s thanks to DW, 26/05/13. Extremely dark mahogony brown wiht a thin beige head. Nose is dark toffee, smoke, peaty notes, treacle, burnt sugars, molasses. Taste comprises brown sugars, peated malt, treacle toffee, dark fruits, tobacco, leather. Full end of medium bodied with soft carbonation, smokey finale with a touch of booze. Good stuff, lots of depth, the alcohol is well integrated, the peat and smoke balances the sugars well.

Appearance: Dark and smoky – liquid charcoal and burnt wood. A thin head fades quickly, leaving behind a tight crema hued collar with a thin free-floating puddle also crema hued. Swirls with tan spots.
Nose: Meaty dark fruits in the middle – figs and prunes. Chocolate dust, espresso crema, and dark caramel nougat along the edges. Oily tobacco leaf on top. Chestnuts roasting over an open fire then dipped in dark chocolate before eating. Black root and vanilla root weave in and out. Subtle smoke and bacon fat, campfire smoke and leather.
Palate: Medium weight and super soft front to middle while the back is dry, parching, and thirst inducing. Sweet meaty smoke with bacon and leather oil. Hint of salt/brine in the very back of swallow. Spicy ABV heat. Tar sneaks in and out. Plums and cherries in the breath. Fine chocolate truffle powder and fudge along the edges.
Final Thoughts: An exquisite beer to say the least. Dark, decadent, smooth, soothing, warming, and dare I say, Islay inspired. Whether intentional or not, the salt/bring essence was a particularly nice touch. The Ola Dubh series from Harviestoun is liquid bliss and well worth the greenbacks spent to enjoy them, the 18 year included.

2009 and wondering if this brew works after so long laying down at 8%. Pours up dark with little head. Low carbonation but fruity boozy flavor that incredibly smooth. No burn of alcohol here but a tad thin. Still love this stuff...

Sensacional cerveja escocesa, álcool presente e perceptível no palato, se misturando com a madeira, café e chocoalte dos maltes, um corpo perfeito, licoroso, baita cerveja !

Like they say in the description the stuff has the motor oil colour going for it that you see in many IMP stouts. About a finger of tan head perks up once your pour it. Smell kind of reminds of bourbon BA stouts, hints of oak and vanilla, bits of smoke as well. Wow, this works really well, up front is sweet and it finishes with a nice smokey aftertaste that’d you’d expect from a glass of scotch.
