COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or "Black Oil") is so named because it is gloopy and viscous. This limited release has been matured in casks from Orkney’s award-winning Highland Park distillery to add complimentary whisky notes to what is already an amazing brew. It is chocolatey with a roasty, bittersweet aftertaste. Special Reserve 18, whisky notes: Highland Park 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky was named Best Spirit in the World by F. Paul Pacult; it offers toffee sweetness, almond nuttiness and a prolonged, smoky aftertaste.

On tap at the Malt House - Pours dark brown with a thin ring of tan head. Nose is peaty whiskey with a boozy sharpness, toffee, and a touch of cherry. Medium roast. Roast is a bit charred in the taste, with chocolate, whiskey, cherries, and a long malty/warming finish. Smooth and velvety. Really nice after dinner drink.

Pours pitch black color with light head. Aroma slightly more bitter and even harsh oaky notes compared to 16. Some rubber notes come through as it warms up. Flavor has some sourish notes from dark fruits, distant salmiac and the familiar ash dry chocolate.

Poured from an 11.2 ounce bottle dated February 2009, bottle number 6432.

A: Pitch black body with a thin tan ring on the top. This looks like a Russian imperial stout.

S: You can smell the scotch here, strong forward oak, slightly peaty, slight chocolate. Rather sweet smelling.

T: Slight roasted malts up front, with mild chocolate, but the oak and scotch flavors come through the most. I’m not sure exactly how to describe scotch very much, but it has this (I think) peaty flavor I taste in my Johnny Walker Gold Label. I honestly don’t think I would have appreciated this very much if I hadn’t gotten into scotch recently. I also think I’m picking up some dried fruits, that could be oxidation though.

M: Medium body, a tad thin even, with light carbonation.

O: This is an interesting beer, I’m not a huge fan but I appreciate the complexity.

Shared bottle @ Cardinal. Pours black as night with a small nice head. Ritch aromas of dark dried fruits and some roastiness. Flavors of nice roasted hops, toffee and malts, some hints of oak. Really smooth mouthfeel. A really nice beer which I will have again!
