COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or "Black Oil") is so named because it is gloopy and viscous. This limited release has been matured in casks from Orkney’s award-winning Highland Park distillery to add complimentary whisky notes to what is already an amazing brew. It is chocolatey with a roasty, bittersweet aftertaste. Special Reserve 18, whisky notes: Highland Park 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky was named Best Spirit in the World by F. Paul Pacult; it offers toffee sweetness, almond nuttiness and a prolonged, smoky aftertaste.

Oily black pour, small brown head. Strong aroma of chocolate and some alcohol. Taste of dark fruits, chocolate, leather and whisky. Nutty aftertaste. Bottle looks very classy!

Keg at brewdog bar, barca. Black with small off white head. Aroma is soy and chocolate, whisky comes strong after swallowing. Taste is sour surprisingly, slightly bitter. Medium carbonation with full body.

Bottle 33cl. Black with a minimal and short-lived lightbrown head. Roasted malty nose, with whiskey, chocolate and vanilla sense. Sweet taste, light bitter with a mild chocolate end.

Bottle from Beltramo’s in Menlo Park, CA. The stuff used to fuel ol’ Kevin as he’s chunting through the peat bog.

bottle at home. Pours medium black, small grey-ish beige head. Deep caramel and toffee, sight smoke. Medium body, sweet and roast. Taste is ashy and salty. Less outspoken than the 12 version.

Bottle. Black colour with small brown foam. Aroma is complex and strong, with roasted malts, whiskey, wood, and chocolate. Taste has lots of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate notes, vanilla, alcohol, smoke. Good balance between bitter and sweet. Medium body. Velvety but not heavy mouthfeel. Very good stuff.

Bottle from Great Grog’s, tasted together with 16yo. Pours very dark brown with brown head. Nose is boozier than in 16yo, whisky, wood, roasted malts. Taste is roasted malts, sweet chocolate, oak, sweet vanilla, whisky, smoke. Taste is fuller and richer than in 16yo but nose is not very tempting. I still recall 12yo was the best of the three, should have tasted it now as well.

Bottle. Pours black with a small head that stays to the end. Aroma is very rich and complex: chocolate, wood, vanilla and of course whiskey. Taste is dominated by bourbon and barrel notes, vanilla. Medium, soft carbonation, very good beer.

Draft at TBBT. Half pour into goblet. Nose is lightly smokey with some dark chocolate. Medium sized brown head. Black in color. Nice lacing. Taste is moderately tart indicating there is some non sacch fermentation. Not horsey tho. Not much too much barrel component other than the smoke and a light vanilla. Overall tasty.

Pitch black-body with a tiny, short-lived, medium brown head that disappears almost completely, but the viscous-looking pour and the lovely colour saves the Appearance. Extraordinarily inviting, sweet, malty and very strong aroma of massive chocolate: dark chocolate, bitter chocolate and chocolate sauce. The beer doesn’t try to hide the fact that it has been aged in whisky barrels: I get lots of lovely notes of gentle whisky, without much peat. Also vanilla, and an overall vinous feel, even with some hints of port. Finally I pick up notes that remind me of lactic sugar, in a milk stout way? Strong flavour of chocolate, dark caramel, gentle whisky, dark dried fruits and a bit too much alcohol. In the back the sweet vanilla further increases the complexity of this brew. The taste is moderate sweet and moderate bitter. The mouthfeel is actually a bit of a letdown, it beer feels far thinner than it looks, and the texture is less oily than expected. In lack of a better word I’d call it a bit watery... The finish is light dry, and the carbonation is soft. A brilliant beer with an amazing aroma and wonderful flavour, but a bit too alcoholic for such a "low" ABV beer, and I would have wanted a fuller body and a thicker and more oily texture.
[33 cl bottle, bottle no 04472, enjoyed 3 years after bottling, from Vinmonopolet Vika (R.I.P.), Oslo]
